For the books: Auburn’s history with the Texas Longhorns

The SEC will go through exciting changes in July 2024, as Oklahoma and Texas will enter the conference.

As each team prepares to join the conference, here is a look back at how well Auburn has performed historically against each newcomer. After examining Auburn’s surprisingly recent history with Oklahoma, it is time to review the Tigers’ history with the Texas Longhorns.

If you are having trouble remembering if Auburn has played Texas in any sport recently, it is because they have not. Auburn football fans may remember the brief rivalry that the two programs built in the 1980s, as the Tigers and Longhorns played each other four times between 1983 and 1991.

Outside of that brief stint, only one major Auburn athletic program has played Texas since the year 2000. Can you guess which one?

Here’s a look at Auburn’s short history with Texas across five major sports.

Record: 3-5

Last meeting: 1991 (Auburn 14 Texas 10)

Auburn has a small dose of history with Texas, as the Tigers and Longhorns have met eight times on the gridiron. The series had plenty of action during the 1980s and early 1990s, as they squared off four times between 1984 and 1991. In the last meeting back in 1991, Auburn jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter, which would be enough to win the game. Stan White connected with Victor Hall on a 25-yard touchdown pass, and Corey Barlow returned an interception 29 yards to cap the scoring.

Last meeting: 1911 (Auburn 45 Texas 27)

One of Auburn men’s basketball’s three wins during the 1910-11 season came against Texas. There is not much information from the game, but Auburn also defeated the Bessemer Athletic Club and the Nashville Athletic Club during the year.

Last meeting: 1999 (Auburn 69 Texas 61)

Auburn Women’s Basketball kicked off the NCAA Tournament in 1999 by defeating Texas in Blacksburg, Virginia. Auburn would ultimately fall to host Virginia Tech to cap their season at 20-9.

Record: 1-0

Last game: 1995 (Auburn 4 Texas 2)

The trend continues with Auburn baseball, as the Tigers have, you guessed it, only played Texas once in program history. The 1995 Tigers took care of Texas in the NCAA Regionals. The game was slow to start, but Auburn’s Josh Etheridge hit a sacrifice fly to score Kevin Chabot to give Auburn the 1-0 lead in the 5th inning. Auburn scored its remaining three runs in the 9th inning on a flyout by Mark Weeks that resulted in an error to score Mark Belhorn and Shawn McNally, and an RBI double by Kirby Clark to score Russell Whittenburg.

Record: 1-1

Last game: 2022 (Auburn 6 Texas 2)

Out of the five major sports highlighted in this history lesson, Auburn softball is the only program to face Texas this millennium. The Longhorns bested the Tigers in 2012 behind a two-run performance by Nadia Taylor, but Auburn got revenge in 2022 at the St. Pete Clearwater Invite. Makayla Packer and Bri Ellis got Auburn on the board in the first inning as two swings of the bat turned into four Auburn runs. Maddie Penta struck out nine Longhorns in the early-season win.
