Blue Jays Roundup: Haley Attleson leads girls basketball at WDA tourney

Feb. 29—BISMARCK — Haley Attleson had a breakout day for the Blue Jays girls basketball team.

The 5-foot-9 sophomore clutched up and scored 17 points in the Jays' tilt against Minot on Thursday afternoon.

Unfortunately — not enough of her teammates could do the same thing.

Attleson and the Jays dropped 83-54 to the Majettes' in the opening round of the WDA tournament. The Blue Jays will face Bismarck Century in the loser-out game on Friday at 4:30 p.m. at the Bismarck Events Center.

Attleson wasn't the only Blue Jay who cracked into double digits on Thursday. Mea Ulland recorded a trio of 3-point shots en route to her 11 points while Adisyn Yunck drained three more from beyond the arc and one at the line to give herself 10 points.

Mari Anderson and Leah Trumbauer also hit shots from 3-point range and went on to score 15 collectively. Amelia Newman rounded out the Jays' scoring with one point.

Minot was led by Leelee Bell (19 points), Karew Lamoureux (16), Eve Knutson (16) and Maggie Fricke (12).

"The girls played hard," JHS head coach Andy Skunberg said. "We just didn't get enough baskets to fall. I am proud of how we battled. Now we build off of this game to tomorrow and try to extend our season. It's win or go home. Go Jays!"

When two of your team's major contributors aren't on the floor — it makes it harder to get a W.

That was the case for the Blue Jay boys Thursday night against Bismarck High.

Head coach Jason Carroll and his squad did what they could against the Demons, but BHS won the WDA tournament quarterfinal 82-47. Jamestown will face Bismarck Legacy in the loser-out game on Friday at 2:45 p.m.

With Noah Meissner out of playing contention and Ryan Larson only seeing 48 seconds of court time on Thursday, the Jays had to rely heavily on senior Dalton Lamp.

The senior delivered, scoring 20 points — nine of which came from 3-point range. The senior was 5-of-6 at the line and tallied seven of the team's 21 boards.

Thomas Newman was the Jays' other big contributor notching nine points and six boards.

The Jays had four other scorers: Gradin Thorlakson, Jack Van Berkom, James Horgan and Jace Dillman all combine for 16 points. Caleb Schiele's two points rounded out the Jays' scoring.

BHS was led by Andre Austin's 25 points.
