Blue Jays Roundup: Boys hockey, basketball fall short in contests Tuesday

Jan. 16—JAMESTOWN — On Jan. 6, the Jamestown High School boys hockey team managed a 5-3 come-from-behind win at Dickinson's barn.

On Jan. 16, Kass Dvorak's crew wasn't so easy to score on.

The Jays dropped 4-0 to the Midgets to move to 5-7 in regular season play. Jamestown's second contest of the week is slated for Friday against Minot. The face-off between the pair of rivals is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Wilson Arena. The Jays will wrap up week No. 10 of the season with a home tilt against Williston at 3:15 p.m. on Saturday.

"It was not our best performance," JHS head coach Matt Stockert said. "I think there are a lot of kids out there who are trying to do things on their own and once we get that worked out, things will be a lot better. We know what the kids are capable of doing and how they can perform up to an expectation and we just didn't do that tonight."

As if a 3-0 lead after one wasn't enough, the Midgets poured some more salt in the wound midway through the second period.

Jamestown's defense crowded the Blue Jays' goal but Kasey Stengel, held tough and landed a shot on Carter Borg to make it a 4-0 game with 8:49 left to play in the second.

No other of the Midgets or the Blue Jays' combined 22 second period shots landed.

"I think we kind of just sat back and certainly didn't play our game," Stockert said. "When you get into that kind

of a hole like that it's hard to recover and rebound.

"On the flip side of that, the last nine minutes of the first period wasn't horrible," he said. "I can live with that as a coach. The second period was a 1-nothing period and we had a couple of opportunities to put the puck in the net and the third period was a 4-nothing period type of thing so in the grand scheme of things we just need to buckle down and learn a little bit here. If we've seen anything this year it's that these kids are willing to learn."

At this point in the season, Stockert said the Jays have played some good hockey but added that he firmly believes the best is yet to come and for fans to expect to see the Jays peak in a couple of weeks.

"If these kids can take the stuff we teach constructively and not make it too big of a deal I think things will turn around for the better," Stockert said. "I firmly believe (the best hockey) is coming so fans, keep on coming to games and enjoy it."

Noah Meissner blew up for the Jamestown High School boys basketball team Tuesday night.

But unfortunately, dropping 34 points wasn't enough to get the team's third non-conference win of the year.

Meissner and the Jays dropped 91-76 to Moorhead (MN) to move to 3-8 on the season. Jamestown's next chance at a conference win is slated for Friday against Dickinson. The Jays and Midgets will square off at 7:45 p.m. at the Jamestown Civic Center.

Meissner had the hot hand on Tuesday draining six 3-pointers, hitting five two-point buckets and draining 6-of-8 from the stripe. Ryan Larson also cracked into double digits, notching 19 points. Jace Dillman and Caleb Schiele were the Jays' No. 3 and 4 scorers, earning six and five points respectively.

Moorhead had three players score at least 17 points to pace the Spuds' 91-point run.
