Ranking all 30 WrestleManias
The Turnstile will affectionately be known as The Turnbuckle this week as we count down to WrestleMania 31 from Levi’s Stadium on March 29. Check back all week on Yahoo Sports to get your daily wrestling fix.
With WrestleMania 31 just days away, Yahoo Sports decided to go back and rank the first 30 pay-per-views. And since wrestling fans love to voice their opinions, leave your feedback in the comments section.
30. WrestleMania XI
Hartford Civic Center (Hartford, Conn.)
If you want my thoughts on Lawrence Taylor’s wrestling skills, check out our top 10 sports cameos list. The highlight of WrestleMania XI might have been Jonathan Taylor Thomas serving as the guest timekeeper in the Shawn Michaels vs. Diesel match.
Match of the night: Diesel vs. Shawn Michaels
29. WrestleMania IX
Caesars Palace (Las Vegas, Nev.)
Do you know how hard it was to come up with a “Match of the night” for this WrestleMania? Of the six times Hulk Hogan won the WWE Championship, his 22-second win against Yokozuna at the conclusion of WrestleMania IX was the most questionable. Fun fact: Prior to his loss at WrestleMania 30, WrestleMania IX was the only time The Undertaker didn’t win via pinfall or submission (he defeated Giant Gonzalez by DQ) during his iconic undefeated streak.
Match of the night: Shawn Michaels vs. Tatanka
28. WrestleMania XXVII
Georgia Dome (Atlanta, Ga.)
A dude (The Miz) who was on “The Real World” headlined WrestleMania. Need I say more?
Match of the night: The Undertaker vs. Triple H
27. WrestleMania 2000
Arrowhead Pond (Anaheim, Calif.)
You know an event is a flop when it’s the only WrestleMania to not get a numerical label.
Match of the night: Edge and Christian vs. The Dudley Boyz vs. The Hardy Boyz

26. WrestleMania 2
Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum (Uniondale, N.Y.), Rosemont Horizon (Rosemont, Ill.), Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena (Los Angeles, Calif.)
What I’m sure sounded like a great idea on paper turned out to be a bust as WrestleMania 2 was spread out over three arenas across the country on a Monday. If that wasn’t weird enough, one of three main events was a "boxing" match between bitter rivals Mr. T and Roddy Piper — one that ended in a disqualification when a frustrated Piper bodyslamed Mr. T.
Match of the night: Mr. T vs. Roddy Piper
25. WrestleMania XV
First Union Center (Philadelphia, Pa.)
Wrestling couldn’t have been hotter in 1999, so it’s fair to consider WrestleMania XV a bit of a bust. Don’t believe me? Go back and watch The Undertaker vs. Big Boss Man Hell in a Cell match. The image of the Big Boss Man (RIP) hanging from the top of the cell with a noose around his neck is a bit disturbing when you watch it 16 years later.
Match of the night: Steve Austin vs. The Rock
24. WrestleMania VII
Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena (Los Angeles, Calif.)
Nothing screamed 1990s patriotism like Iraqi supporter Sgt. Slaughter turning his back on the United States and Hulk Hogan coming to the rescue. ‘Merica, brother.
Match of the night: The Ultimate Warrior vs. Randy Savage
23. WrestleMania VIII
Hoosier Dome (Indianapolis, Ind.)
Instead of a match featuring two of the biggest starts in their prime between Hulk Hogan vs. Ric Flair … fans had to settle for Hogan vs. Sid Justice. While we will never know the real story as to why the face of the WWE didn’t wrestle the face of WCW, Flair was still paired with Randy Savage in an entertaining (and bloody) co-main event.
Match of the night: Randy Savage vs. Ric Flair
22. WrestleMania V
Trump Plaza (Atlantic City, N.J.)
The seeds were planted for Randy Savage vs. Hulk Hogan a year prior at WrestleMania IV. Miss Elizabeth (Savage’s real life wife) played a key role in the feud because who hasn’t fought over the attention of a pretty woman with your best buddy? Prior to the main event, there were 13 (!) other matches on this card that you can simply skip over.
Match of the night: Randy Savage vs. Hulk Hogan
21.
WrestleMania 23
Ford Field (Detroit, Mich.)
I still groan at the fact that Donald Trump played such a predominant role on a WrestleMania card.
Match of the night: John Cena vs. Shawn Michaels
20. WrestleMania 29
MetLife Stadium (East Rutherford, N.J.)
Match of the night: The Undertaker vs. CM Punk
You know that whole “Once in a Lifetime” tagline for the WrestleMania 28 main event between The Rock and John Cena? Just kidding. WWE decided to do the rematch a year later but for the championship. And like any Hollywood blockbuster, the sequel wasn’t nearly as good. With that said, the final three matches (Undertaker vs. CM Punk, Triple H vs. Brock Lesnar and Cena vs. Rock) combined with the setting of MetLife Stadium makes for an enjoyable show.
19. WrestleMania IV
Trump Plaza (Atlantic City, N.J.)
March Madness wasn’t the only tournament taking place in the spring of 1988. The WWE held a one-day, 14-man tournament to crown a new champion. Hulk Hogan pulled a Villanova and was knocked out in the quarterfinals, setting up an underwhelming final match between Randy Savage and Ted DiBiase.
Match of the night: Randy Savage vs. Ted DiBiase
18. WrestleMania 21
Staples Center (Los Angeles, Calif.)
The major flaw of WrestleMania 21 was Kurt Angle and Shawn Michaels putting on an excellent match before the two championship matches. John Cena vs. John Layfield and Batista vs. Triple H had no shot and it hurt the overall card as a result.
Match of the night: Kurt Angle vs. Shawn Michaels
17. WrestleMania XXIV
Citrus Bowl (Orlando, Fla.)
Match of the night: Shawn Michaels vs. Ric Flair
It’s not every night you see a wrestler mouth the words “I love you” to a fellow performer before kicking him in the jaw but that was the case at WrestleMania XXIV. Shawn Michaels had the tough task of wrestling and subsequently ending the career of friend and mentor Ric Flair.
16. WrestleMania XII
Arrowhead Pond (Anaheim, Calif.)
Long before he was a multi-time world champion, the "King of Kings" and WWE executive, Triple H (known then as Hunter Hearst Helmsley) was losing in 90 seconds to The Ultimate Warrior. As for the main event, the 60-minute Iron Man match between Shawn Michaels and Bret Hart told an excellent story from start to finish, culminating in the “Heartbreak Kid” winning the WWE Championship for the first time.
Match of the night: Bret Hart vs. Shawn Michaels
15. WrestleMania XXVI
University of Phoenix Stadium (Phoenix, Ariz.)
“Mr. WrestleMania” hung up his boots for good as Shawn Michaels wrestled his final match at WrestleMania XXVI in a rematch against The Undertaker. If you’re wondering how Michaels earned that nickname, count the number of times you see his name throughout this post under the “Match of the night” category. And while it was an atrocious match against Mr. McMahon, there was something nostalgic seeing Bret Hart competing at a WrestleMania again.
Match of the night: The Undertaker vs. Shawn Michaels
14. WrestleMania 13
Rosemont Horizon (Rosemont, Ill.)
Bret Hart walked into his match as the babyface while Steve Austin was the heel. The roles were reversed by the end of the night thanks to a battered and bloodied Austin who refused to give up and Hart’s refusal to release his patented sharpshooter submission.
Match of the night: Bret Hart vs. Steve Austin
13. WrestleMania 22
Allstate Arena (Rosemont, Ill.)
The last WrestleMania to be held in an arena could have likely filled a stadium based on the quality of matches. Edge would have the honor of working with Mick Foley in his final WrestleMania match. And like most Foley matches, it was a hardcore war that saw him take a spear as he crashed through a flaming table on the outside.
Match of the night: Edge vs. Mick Foley
12. WrestleMania XIV
FleetCenter (Boston, Mass.)
When celebrity involvement in wrestling is done right, it can be an absolute home run. That was definitely the case at WrestleMania XIV as Mike Tyson served as a special outside enforcer in the main event between Steve Austin and Shawn Michaels. And if the hardcore style is more of your thing, this card featured a memorable Dumpster match between two extreme legends in Cactus Jack (Mick Foley) and Chainsaw Charlie (Terry Funk) going against The New Age Outlaws.
Match of the night: Steve Austin vs. Shawn Michaels
11. WrestleMania I
Madison Square Garden (New York, N.Y.)
If you watch the first WrestleMania and imagine it as just another pay-per-view, it would be an OK show sprinkled in with some celebrity cameos. The fact of the matter is this was more than just another pay-per-view. It was the pay-per-view that helped Vince McMahon transform the WWE from a regional promotion to a national powerhouse.
Match of the night: Nikolai Volkoff and The Iron Sheik vs. Mike Rotundo and Barry Windham
10. WrestleMania XXVIII
Sun Life Stadium (Miami, Fla.)
The WWE had the rare opportunity to spend an entire year building towards a WrestleMania main event as John Cena challenged The Rock to a match the night after WrestleMania XXVII. The eventual match was dubbed “Once in a Lifetime” (Spoiler: They lied) and will go down in history as the most purchased wrestling pay-per-view of all time at 1.2 million buys.
Match of the night: The Undertaker vs. Triple H
9. WrestleMania VI
SkyDome (Toronto, Canada)
The Ultimate Warrior vs. Hulk Hogan was like Prince vs. Michael Jackson for wrestling fans. You had to pick a side and a good number of fans were siding with the relative newcomer in The Ultimate Warrior. Hogan losing 1-2-3 in the middle of the ring on pay-per-view was something that just didn’t happen in the late 1980s, which made this match and title change even more special.
Match of the night: The Ultimate Warrior vs. Hulk Hogan
8. WrestleMania XXV
Reliant Stadium (Houston, Texas)
Yes, this card had an awful Kid Rock performance. Yes, a man won a woman’s battle royal for some odd reason. And yes, Mickey Rourke punched Chris Jericho in the face. But none of that mattered after one of the greatest matches of all time between The Undertaker and Shawn Michaels.
Match of the night: The Undertaker vs. Shawn Michaels
7. WrestleMania XX
Madison Square Garden (New York, N.Y.)
Chris Benoit has been essentially wiped away from WWE history (and for good reason), but his triple threat match against Triple H and Shawn Michaels is pretty hard to ignore. Multi-man single matches normally don’t work for a variety of reasons. Not this one. All three men were in their prime as two former wrestlers in Benoit and Eddie Guerrero from World Championship Wrestling would walk out of MSG with WWE gold.
Match of the night: Chris Benoit vs. Shawn Michaels vs. Triple H
6. WrestleMania X
Madison Square Garden (New York, N.Y.)
The WWE product might not have been red-hot in 1994, but WrestleMania X featured two memorable matches in Owen Hart vs. Bret Hart and Razor Ramon vs. Shawn Michaels in a Ladder match for the Intercontinental Championship. The feud between the Hart brothers started four months prior and would continue well past Owen Hart’s improbable win over his big brother Bret. And while it wasn’t the first Ladder match in WWE history, it was the first in WrestleMania history and still arguably one of the best.
Match of the night: Shawn Michaels vs. Razor Ramon
5. WrestleMania III
Pontiac Silverdome (Pontiac, Mich.)
Hulk Hogan bodyslamming Andre the Giant was great and all, but it wasn’t even the first time Hogan pulled off the feat against the 500-pound behemoth. The real stars of the show were Ricky Steamboat and Randy Savage. It’s safe to call this battle the greatest WWE Intercontinental Championship match of all time and despite losing, would go a long way in helping elevate Savage to be on par with the likes of Hogan.
Match of the night: Ricky Steamboat vs. Randy Savage
4. WrestleMania X8
SkyDome (Toronto, Canada)
Hulk Hogan returned to the SkyDome 12 years after his memorable battle against The Ultimate Warrior for another historic clash against The Rock. Those crazy Canadians weren’t sticking with the script on who to cheer for so Hogan (heel) and Rock (babyface) called an audible during the match. The quick thinking on Hogan’s part led to a 49-year-old stealing the show one last time in Toronto.
Match of the night: The Rock vs. Hulk Hogan
3. WrestleMania XIX
Safeco Field (Seattle, Wash.)
If you want to see how much of an athletic freak Brock Lesnar was in his younger days, the newly re-signed WWE champion attempted a backflip from the top rope on Kurt Angle. Even though he failed miserably and could have broke his neck in the process, it was a thing of beauty.
Match of the night: Brock Lesnar vs. Kurt Angle
2.
WrestleMania 30
Mercedes-Benz Superdome (New Orleans, La.)
The vocal wrestling fans deserve credit for making this the best WrestleMania in recent years. Thanks to their displeasure for the original proposed main event of Randy Orton vs. Batista, WWE called an audible and inserted the underdog Daniel Bryan into the mix. The end result was 75,167 fans chanting “YES!” after Bryan defeated Orton and Batista to win the WWE Championship. You would have never known that just one hour prior, the Superdome was nearly silent following the unexpected end to The Undertaker’s undefeated streak at the hands of Brock Lesnar.
Match of the night: Daniel Bryan vs. Batista vs. Randy Orton
1. WrestleMania X-Seven
Reliant Astrodome (Houston, Texas)
From top to bottom, you will be hard pressed to find a better card than WrestleMania X-Seven. Steve Austin vs. The Rock. The Undertaker vs. Triple H. Hell, even the filler match of the 19-man gimmick battle royal featured a classic cast of characters ranging from Doink the Clown to The Iron Sheik. The WWE voted WrestleMania X-Seven the best pay-per-view ever and it’s hard to disagree.
Match of the night: Steve Austin vs. The Rock
