Blizzard forces Washington Capitals to move puck drop vs. Ducks

The Washington, D.C. area is bracing for a blizzard that could drop up to 30 inches of snow through the weekend. What better way to kick off a major winter storm even than at the good old hockey game, right?!

The Washington Capitals were scheduled to play the Anaheim Ducks on Friday night at 7 p.m. ET. One problem: The D.C. Metro is shutting down at 11 p.m. that evening. Since that’s the primary mode of transportation for fans coming to Verizon Center, that would have been cutting it close for some headed to the game (and having plans afterwards).

So the Capitals have moved the start of their game to 5 p.m. against the Ducks, who are supposed to travel to Detroit to face the Red Wings on Saturday night. The earlier start time no doubt accommodates that as well.

This isn’t the first time the Capitals have kept a game on the schedule despite a blizzard.

Please recall the glory of “Snowvechkin” in 2010, when they played a game at against the Atlanta Thrashers (RIP) on Friday night as the storm started and then the Pittsburgh Penguins on Sunday afternoon as the region was still digging out.  They beat the Penguins in a memorable pre-Super Bowl game on national television.

Their opponent on the afternoon of Jan. 23, a.k.a. this Sunday? The Pittsburgh Penguins.

According to the Capitals: "The Capitals remain in communication with the NHL, Pittsburgh Penguins and local government officials regarding the status of Sunday’s 12:30 p.m. game against the Penguins at Verizon Center. In the event of any schedule changes, the Capitals will email all season-ticket holders and communicate updates immediately via WashingtonCaps.com and social media platforms."
