LSU RB Leonard Fournette addressed teammates following his Heisman pose

LSU freshman running back Leonard Fournette took a lot of flack from around the country when, after scoring his first collegiate touchdown against Sam Houston State last weekend, he flashed the Heisman pose.

During the SEC teleconference on Wednesday, coach Les Miles said Fournette realized his over exuberance and addressed his teammates about his actions.

"There's an appropriate time for that," Miles said. "It will always be viewed in the interest of the team. Leonard certainly understands that. He addressed the team and described that's something he wishes he had not done. He's right on pace.

"One thing about him: He truly is a humble guy. There's nobody that works harder, there's nobody that learns as fast. We would expect that he would have really a great campaign in his true freshman year."

Unfortunately, Fournette’s pose came just days after Miles tried to temper expectations for his budding superstar. But the fact that he went to his teammates and addressed his mistakes does say something about his maturity and his eventual leadership. He is, after all, just a freshman.

Still, Miles knows that Fournette, who rushed for 92 yards in last week’s win, might have been premature in his posturing, but he doesn’t want to temper his expectations.

"You'd rather have a guy who was ambitious and would see the opportunity to win a national award," Miles said. "That being said, you also want to curb that enthusiasm and say there'll be plenty of time for that as we go forward.

"No matter who steps forward and shows that Heisman Trophy pose ... we've been around three of them: (Michigan receiver) Desmond Howard won the Heisman, (former LSU cornerback) Patrick Peterson certainly was in the running and Fournette."
