According to affidavit, assistant coach witnessed Carl Pelini use cocaine and marijuana

Friday afternoon, Florida Atlantic officials released a signed affidavit from an assistant coach that said he witnessed former coach Carl Pelini use cocaine and marijuana.

Assistant coach Matt Edwards said he saw both Pelini and former defensive coordinator Pete Rekstis use both drugs. That included witnessing them using marijuana on Oct. 19 in Key West. Pelini and Rekstis resigned on Wednesday after they were confronted by school officials about reports of drug use.

Athletic director Pat Chun said he learned of the allegations on Monday. When he met with the two coaches on Wednesday, they resigned immediately.

Per the affidavit, which you can view in full here along with emails from the university from WPTV, Allison Stewart said she witnessed Pelini smoking marijuana on Oct. 19 and that Pelini admitted drug use in a text message on Oct. 20.

Florida Atlantic is 2-6 this season and plays Tulane Saturday.
