Nate Andrews will succeed his older brother, Shawn, as Marysville boys wrestling coach, pending school board approval.

Shawn Andrews stepped down as boys coach in August to take over the school's girls wrestling program.

Nate, 43, will become the third consecutive member of the Andrews family to lead the Monarchs. Shawn and Nate's father, Lenard, stepped down in 2007 after coaching Marysville for nine seasons.

“It’s some big shoes to fill,” said Nate, a 1998 Marysville graduate. “I hope to build on the tradition that is there and bring in some fresh energy into the program.”

Nate was the wrestling coach at Bunsold Middle School the past four seasons and previously served as an assistant under his brother for five seasons. He also has served as an assistant coach at North Union and Olentangy.

“When we went into the process, our goal was to make sure we’re bringing in somebody that is a dynamic and innovative leader,” athletic director Joey Day said. “The experience that he has not only with our program, but with wrestling in general, and the stops that he’s had certainly was attractive. He wants to make it his own.”

Nate also has coached Marysville’s girls soccer program, leading it to a Division I district title in 2019. He stepped down in 2020 after five seasons.

Shawn, a 1996 Marysville graduate, went 225-79 with eight OCC championships, eight sectional titles and four district championships in his 16 seasons as boys coach.

“I think Shawn is happy with the situation,” Nate said. “To step away from a program that you’ve helped build and grow for 16 years is a tough thing to do. To know someone is going to be there and will bring a staff with him I know brings him some ease and makes the transition of him coaching the girls a little bit easier.”

Lenard compiled a 116-34 record as Marysville's coach. The school's wrestling room is named in his honor, and he was inducted into the Ohio Wrestling Coaches Association Hall of Fame last year.
