Berlin Brothersvalley blanks Conemaugh Valley; Windber impresses against Fairfield

EAST TAYLOR TOWNSHIP — Berlin Brothersvalley head coach Doug Paul earned the 150th win of his career in Saturday afternoon’s season opener at Conemaugh Valley as the Mountaineers took command early and dominated all phases of the game in a 42-0 victory.

A relentless defense that converted three first-half Blue Jay turnovers into touchdowns was complemented by an all-around effort from quarterback Pace Prosser, who ran for two scores and threw a pair of touchdown passes.

“We came out and executed,” said Paul, whose team put together five first-half touchdown drives and added a pick-six to complete the scoring before the break. “The takeaways on defense were huge, they really got after it. Offensively, we wanted to both throw and run the ball, and take what the defense was giving us depending on the situation.”

By the numbers

Prosser completed 8 of 12 passes for 116 yards and a pair of scores, while rushing for a team-leading 56 yards on four carries and two touchdowns. Berlin Brothersvalley outgained Conemaugh Valley 237-38 in total yardage during the first half.

“Our game plan was to get off to a fast start, work the ball down the field, and spread it around to all the athletes we have,” Prosser said. “Everybody had a great day today.”

Connor Montgomery was a perfect 6-for-6 on extra point attempts. The Blue Jays did not have a possession in the red zone during the entire contest.

Unsung hero

Blubaugh caught four passes for 67 yards and two touchdowns. He also had a 47-yard interception return for a score midway through the second quarter.

They said it

Conemaugh Valley was turnover-prone against Berlin. That proved to be a recipe for disaster for the Blue Jays.

“I preached to the kids all week, we can’t turn the ball over against a team like Berlin,” Conemaugh Valley coach Matt Kent said. “We gave them that opening and they made us pay. You need to hold onto the ball as much as you can, run the clock down, and keep their offense off the field to keep yourself in the game.”
