Benedictine promotes assistant to new role as head baseball coach

Jason Pascual, a veteran high school baseball coach who has been an assistant at Benedictine the last two seasons, was hired as the new leader of the highly-respected BC program on Saturday.

Pascual replaces Kevin Farmer, who stepped down at the end of the 2023 season at the age of 49 after a stellar career of 21 seasons.

Farmer, from the BC Class of 1992, won four state titles in his career with the first two coming at Calvary Day. He took over at his alma mater in 2013 and led the Cadets to state crowns in 2014 and 2018 -- closing out with a career record of 517-157-2.

Pascual, 42, has 18 years of experience as a coach and teacher. He is the chair of BC's Theology Department and has developed strong relationships with players and coaches in his two years working with the pitching staff under Farmer.

A native of Jacksonville, Florida, Pascual played baseball at Bishop Kenny High School under Bob West, a member of the Florida Athletic Association Hall of Fame. He earned a degree in business administration from Seton Hall and was a member of the Pirate baseball team in 1999. He was an assistant coach at perennial power Bishop Kenny, his alma mater, for 16 years.

"Coach Pascual has a tremendous amount of experience as a coach at two highly successful programs," BC Athletic Director Jack Holland said. "What stands out to me is his passion for the game -- he just loves every aspect of baseball from the competition on the field to the relationships you develop along the way. He relates well with the student athletes at Benedictine in the classroom and on the field -- and I think that is going to serve him well in his new role."

Pascual said he is excited about taking on the new role and said his experience since starting at BC has been rewarding.

"I had always heard about the brotherhood at Benedictine, but once I got here -- I realized it was true," said Pascual, who is the father of four sons between the ages of 10 years and nine months with his wife, Sarah. "It's unique with the support you get from the community. It's really special to see the bond the alumni base has with the school and the way the members of the student body support each other -- it's refreshing to see in today's society."

BC went 22-11 last season and the Cadets lost to Whitewater in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs, losing the series two games to one. The Cadets reached the state semis in 2022, losing to eventual state champion North Oconee.

The Cadets have a talented team coming back next season led by Parker McCoy, the senior infielder/pitcher who has committed to play at North Carolina and rising junior Landon Ludwig, who was also an All-Greater Savannah first-team pick as an outfielder/pitcher.

"We're going to continue to work to develop our players so they can reach their potential and contribute to a winning program," Pascual said. "The goal is to be as successful as possible and we're going to get the coaches and players working together to reach that goal."
