Bedford pitchers shine on Day 3 of Monroe County Fair Softball
Bedford won one game Tuesday at the 49th annual Monroe County Fair Softball Tournament.
Rain won the second.
Bedford rode a 1-hitter by Sophia Steinman and Alexa Gariety to a 5-0 victory over Whiteford.
Day 1: Fast start for South Rockwood
Day 2: Ida, Bedford roll to wins
Monroe and Summerfield were tied 6-6 when rain forced their game to be postponed.
They will finish that contest at 3:15 p.m. Wednesday with the winner moving on to take on Bedford at 4:30. The day will conclude with the winners’ bracket finals featuring Ida and South Rockwood at 6:15.
Bedford is fighting its way back through the losers’ bracket after falling 6-1 to Ida in its opening game Sunday when coach Brian Benore had just seven players available.
“I was definitely disappointed Sunday that we only had seven girls,” Benore said. “I was glad they let us play and actually, I was really proud of the girls. But it definitely stinks to lose that first one and have our backs to the wall for the rest of the tournament.”
Bedford bounced back nicely with a 19-0 rout of Frenchtown Monday, then posted another shutout Tuesday.
Steinman started in the circle Tuesday and gave up 1 hit over her three innings with 3 strikeouts and 2 walks. Alexa Gariety tossed the last three innings. She did not yield a hit while logging 5 strikeouts and 3 walks.
“Both of them started a little slow,” Benore said. “They each walked the first hitter, but we got out of it in the first by getting a runner in a pickle at third, then threw out a runner stealing.”
Alexis Williams was the catcher who cut down the would-be base stealer.
Maddy Steinman had the big hit of the day, a double to plate two runs. Vayda Benore, Lilly Vidra and Mya Smithson collected two hits each.
“This was a very good test,” Benore said.
The coach believes his team can come all the way back and win the tournament.
“I am confident and the girls are definitely very confident,” he said.
Avery Welch had Whiteford’s lone hit.
