Bearkat athletes bring joy to Bayes students

Nov. 22—It was a cold, gray, and drizzly Monday afternoon but the gymnasium of the Bayes Achievement Center (Bayes) echoed with laughter, cheering, and the roar of the crowd.

The 68 students of Bayes and their staff were joined by the entire Sam Houston State University (SHSU) men's basketball team along with their coaching staff, led by Head Coach Chris Mudge, for an hour of basketball fun on Monday, Oct. 30.

The Bearkat athletes and their coaches joined the Bayes students in basketball relay races, fun drills, and "knock-out" competitions.

The Bearkats ended the visit with a dazzling dunk contest and three-point shoot-out, while the Bayes students and staff cheered them on.

"Working with these kids at Bayes is a moving moment. Being able to put a smile on the kids' faces just by showing up is an experience every person needs to have at least once in their life," said Junior Bearkat Forward Cameron Huefner, while taking a break from the action. "Making their day playing basketball with them is something that I hope to do again soon."

Smiles could be seen throughout the gym as basketballs flew through the air and bounced their way down the court.

"Volunteering at Bayes was a great experience for me. I got the chance to connect with kids and impact their lives in a positive way. I think it impacted me more than them though," SHSU Junior Guard Lamar Wilkerson said about the experience. "When we're able to give joy to others it makes a lasting impact and that's important to me and our program."

Bayes Executive Director Daniel Bayes was pleased with the afternoon visit.

"This is the first time most of our kids have every experienced anything like this. These smiles on their faces are priceless. We're so appreciative of Coach Mudge, the assistant coaches, and these amazing Bearkat athletes for making a difference in the lives of our kids. They won't ever forget it," said Bayes.
