Basketball roundup: Greenville Lions lose at Melissa; Royse City beats Rockwall

MELISSA — Melissa avenged a 56-52 loss to Greenville with a 71-52 home win over the Lions on Tuesday night.

Greenville dropped to 4-3 in District 13-5A play while Melissa improved to 4-3. Sherman leads the district at 6-0. McKinney North is 4-2. The teams are battling for four playoff spots.

Greenville hung tough with Melissa during the second and third quarters but was outscored 13-7 in the first period and 24-12 in the final quarter.

Austin Goosby led the victors with 19 points, while Ayo Dimkpa scored 13 and Anthony Thornton and Kennedy Brantley both added 12.

Anthony Johnson led the Lions with 19 points and Damon Jones and Kyler Darter both tossed in nine.

The Lions will enjoy a bye on Friday before resuming district play on Tuesday at home against the district leader, Sherman. Sherman beat the Lions 85-55 at Sherman on Jan. 5.

ROYSE CITY — The Royse City Bulldogs improved to 3-4 in District 10-6A with a 63-55 home win over rival Rockwall on Tuesday.

Jammel Ward led the victors with 17 points, while Jalen Rollins and Sammy Thompson both tossed in 10 points, Cade Buckner added eight, Jacob Lane finished with seven and Nicholas Weaver tossed in six.

The Rockwall Jackets are now 4-3 in district play.

D'Von Turner led Rockwall and all scorers with 18 points, followed Mason Shepherd with 17 and Cadyn Townsend with nine.

Royse City is to play next at Mesquite on Friday.

Rockwall girls 43

Royse City 38

ROCKWALL — Rockwall handed the Royse City Lady Bulldogs their first loss in District 10-6A play on Tuesday, 43-38.

Rockwall is now tied with Mesquite for second place in the district standings at 6-3. Royse City remained alone in first place at 7-1.

Mack Lindigrin led Rockwall with 15 points, while Nicole Aguirre scored 10.

Trinidi King led Royse City and all scorers with 18 points and Alivia Wanton tossed in seven. Kayla Sargent added five points and Destiny Alexander and Jade Williams both tossed in four points.

Royse City, now 25-4 for the season, is scheduled to play next at home on Friday against Mesquite

Wolfe City girls 41

Honey Grove 36

WOLFE CITY — The Wolfe City Lady Wolves moved up into a tie for first place in District 14-2A with a 41-36 win over the district leader Honey Grove on Tuesday night.

Both teams are now 8-2 in district play.

Ella Hale led Wolfe City with 14 points, while Lyric Sandlin scored 10, followed by Hadlee Painter (6), Cameron Willams (5), Kinsly Woodruff (4) and Reagan Scott (2).

Wolfe City is scheduled to play next at Bland on Friday.

Alba-Golden 62

Cumby 48

CUMBY — Alba-Golden upped its District 15-2A record to 5-1 with a 62-48 win on Tuesday over the Cumby Trojans.

Chett Vaughan, named the Herald-Banner Athlete of the Week after scoring 43 points in a win last week over Como-Pickton, led the Trojans with 19 points.

Also scoring for Cumby were Montgomery Benton (8), Jace Evans (6), Chayton Vaughan (5), Dakari Johnson (4), Jackson Petty (3) and Lane McCraw (3).

Cumby dropped to 2-5 in district play.

Bland 59

Trenton 37

TRENTON — Bland upped its District 14-2A record to 5-3 with a 59-37 win over Trenton on Tuesday.

Bland spread the scoring around among Weston Wigington (17 points), Bennett Cowdrey (15), Ashton Stiggers (13), Nicholas Hammack (7), Ashton Stepp (5) and Xavier Ramirez (2).

Bland will play next at home on Friday against Wolfe City.

Melissa girls 94

Greenville 12

MELISSA — Melissa jumped out to a 31-6 lead in the first quarter and never looked back on the way to a 94-12 District 13-5A win over the Greenville Lady Lions on Tuesday.

Gabby Hale led the Lady Lions with six points. Caroline Scarbrough, Savannah Blevins and Jazaiyae Blunt scored two points each as the Lady Lions dropped to 0-26 for the season and 0-10 in district play.

The Lady Lions are scheduled to play next at home on Tuesday against Sherman.

Noelle Pletcher led Melissa with 21 points, while Caigan Crabtree tossed in17, Kennedy Stout added 15 and Lily Cox 11 as Melissa improved to 6-2 in district play.

Caddo Mills 68

Quinlan Ford 53

QUINLAN — The Caddo Mills Foxes upped their District 14-4A record to 7-0 with a 68-53 win over Quinlan Ford on Tuesday.

Caddo Mills is now 22-4 for the season.

Ford dropped to 14-13 overall and 2-5 in district play.

Ford is to play at Farmersville on Friday and Caddo Mills is to play a non-district game at Tyler Chapel Hill.

Sam Rayburn girls 60

IVANHOE, Texas — Sam Rayburn rolled to a 60-37 District 14-2A win over the Celeste Lady Devils on Tuesday.

Celeste dropped to 4-6 in district play while Sam Rayburn improved to 5-2.

Taylea West led Celeste with 16 points. MaddieClaire Park was next with 12 points, while Kennedy Compton added seven.

Celeste is to play again at home on Friday against the district co-leader, Honey Grove.
