QUINCY, MI. - The Quncy Orioles secured a key Big 8 conference sweep on Thursday, defeating the Springport Spartans by scores of 8-4 and 12-1.

Game one saw Quincy break a 4-4 tie with four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take the 8-4 win.

Brady Mescher took the win on the mound for Quincy after throwing all seven innings, allowing eight hits and four runs, none earned, with one walk and six strikeouts.

Mescher helped out his own cause at the plate, going 3 for 3 with two singles and a double with a walk, an RBI and two runs scored. Hunter Tinervia also had a big game in the Orioles win, finishing 3 for 3 with three singles, one walk, one RBI and two runs scored.

Also adding to the Quincy game one win was Brennan Allman with two walks and a run scored; Ryan Kempter with a walk and a run scored; Ethan Copas with a walk; Brody Fillmore with two walks and a run scored; Grant Holroyd with a double and two RBIs; Mickey Connin with two singles and two RBIs; and Dreyden Feltner with a single.

Game two saw the Orioles blow past Springport enroute to the 12-1 five inning win. Quincy scored two runs in the first inning, seven runs in the third, one in the fourth and two in the sixth while Springport only scored one run in the fifth inning to find the final score of 12-1.

Quincy outhit Springport 5-3 in the win but took advantage of 12 walks for the victory.

Dreyden Feltner secured the win on the mound for Quincy, throwing six full innings, allowing three hits and one run with two walks and 12 strikeouts.

Alex Barry led the Quincy attack on offense, finishing a perfect 3 for 3 with three singles, three RBIs and a run scored.

Also adding to the Quincy win was Brennan Allman with three walks and two runs scored; Ryan Kempter with two walks, an RBI and two runs scored; Grant Wright with a walk; Brady Mescher with an RBI, a walk and a run scored; Hunter Tinervia with three walks, an RBI and three runs scored; Mickey Connin with a single, an RBI and a run scored; Grant Holroyd with a single and a walk; Parker Fraley with an RBI; Brody Filmore with a walk and two runs scored; and Micah Groves with a run scored.

With the two game sweep the Quincy Orioles improve to 10-3 overall on the season. Quincy will next see action on Tuesday when they host Jonesville for the final Big 8 meeting between the two teams.

Union City falls in sweep at Concord, game two ends in nine inning heartbreak 

CONCORD, MI. - The Union City Chargers stumbled on the road Thursday night, dropping a key Big 8 doubleheader to Concord, falling by scores of 7-5 and 5-4.

Game one saw Concord take the lead late, scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take the 7-5 win. Union City had overcome a slim 4-2 deficit with three runs in the fifth inning however the Yellow Jackets were able to squeeze out the victory with the three run sixth inning.

Ryan Zweng took the loss on the mound for Union City after throwing five and two-thirds of an inning, allowing six hits and seven runs, five earned, with two walks and eight strikeouts.

Eli Payne pitched the final third of an inning, allowing one hit while striking out one.

Tyler Wagley led the Union City offense, going 3 for 4 with three singles and an RBI. Also adding to the Union City effort was Owen Jackson with a walk, an RBI and a run scored; Aidan Decker with a single; Phoenix Elkins with a single and a double with an RBI; Rick Austin with a single and a run scored; Luke Watson with a run scored; Jakob Fosmore with a walk and an RBI; Alex Hull with a walk; and Eli Payne with two runs scored.

Game two of the night could not be contained to just seven innings as the teams headed to the extra frame to decide the contest. Union City actually held a 3-2 lead late, however Concord was able to score a single run in the top of the seventh to tie the game, sending it to extra innings. In the end it was the Yellow Jackets putting up two runs in the top of the ninth inning to negate the tie, taking a 5-3 lead. 

Union City battled to the end of the game, loading the bases with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. A Tyler Wagley bases loaded walk brought home Aidan Decker, closing the score to 5-4. Concord was able to get out of the jam, inducing a fly ball in the next at-bat to end the game, giving the Yellow Jackets the exciting 5-4 win.

Luke Watson took the loss on the mound for Union City after throwing eight full innings, allowing nine hits and five runs with three walks and three strikeouts. Eli Payne threw the final full inning of play, walking one.

Rick Austin led the Charger offense, finishing 2 for 3 with two singles, a walk and two runs scored. Also adding to the Charger effort was Owen Jackson with a single; Aiden Decker with a walk and a run; Ryan Zweng with a double; Phoenix Elkins with three walks; Tyler Wagley with three walks and an RBI; Luke Watson with an RBI; Eli Payne with an RBI; and Alex Hull with a run scored.

With the tough two losses the Union City Chargers fall to 12-5 overall on the season. Union City will next see action on Saturday when they head to Battle Creek to compete in a tournament at C.O. Brown Stadium. The Chargers will open play with a game versus Fowlerville beginning at 11 a.m.
