Baseball: Chargers knock off Brown County for first win

Apr. 1—NASHVILLE — In the Brown County Round Robin tournament Saturday, North Decatur went 1-1 on the day with a 21-10 loss to Milan in the opener and a 6-4 win over the host Eagles in the second game.

In the opener, the Indians scored in each of the five innings en route to the victory. North scored five runs in the third inning to close the deficit to 12-8, but could not get any closer.

Milan had 16 hits, led by Morgan and Baylor with three hits each. Herd, Morgan and Engle all drove in three runs.

The Chargers finished with eight hits. Xander Jones had three singles in his three at bats. Kamdenn McKinney had two hits and a team-high three RBIs. Other hits for North came off the bats of Tyler Dean, Eli Trenkamp and Brayden Murray (one RBI).

Trenkamp pitched three innings in relief, allowing nine runs on 10 hits and one walk while striking out one. nine runs while striking out one and walking one. Jones took the loss for the Chargers, going 1.1 innings and allowing seven earned runs on three hits and three walks while striking out three. Murray pitched .2 of an inning with two earned runs and one strikeout.

In the second game, North opened the scoring at the top of the second thanks to two singles. Grayson Downey had two hits and one RBI. Nolan Burkhart had two hits and two RBIs. McKinney added two hits and one RBI. Dean, Jones, Murray and Hunter Meister all had one hit.

McKinney earned the win for the Chargers. He surrendered five hits and three earned runs over seven innings, striking out nine and walking one.

North opened the season Friday with a 7-0 loss at Franklin County.

Dean took the loss giving up four earned runs in three innings with four walks and one strikeout.

Trenkamp, Jones and Downey each collected one hit for the Chargers.

South Decatur

FAIRLAND — South Decatur opened the baseball season with a doubleheader at Triton Central Saturday.

In the opener, the Tigers led 2-1 after three innings, but scored eight combined runs in the next two innings to take the win 10-1.

Devin Pate led the South offensive with three hits, including a double. Colby Rathburn had the other hit for South. Corey Nugent drove in the run for the Cougars.

On the hill for South, Pate pitched four innings, allowing four earned runs on five hits and three walks while striking out six. Nugent pitched two innings, allowing five earned runs on five hits and three walks while striking out three.

Bryce Haney got the win on the mound for the Tigers, allowing one earned run on three hits and three walks while striking out 11 in five innings.

Triton Central took Game 2 of the double-dip 16-2. Hayden May got the win on the mound for the Tigers. He pitched two innings and allowed no runs, no hits, no walks and struck out four Cougars.

Batesville

BATESVILLE — Batesville's Eli Loichinger struck out 11 Rising Sun batters to help lead the Bulldogs past Rising Sun 13-0 Friday. Loichinger allowed zero hits and zero runs over five innings while walking none.

Batesville scored seven runs in the second inning. Loichinger doubled, scoring one run. Carson Schneider singled to drive in one run. Joshua Borgman singled to score one run. A passed ball scored one run and two Rising Sun errors allowed three Bulldog runs to score.

Batesville added one run in the third on another Rising Sun error.

Batesville scored five runs on six hits in the bottom of the fourth inning. Chris Lewis singled to drive in one run. Loichinger singled, scoring one run. Carter Bohman doubled to score two runs and Schneider singled to drive in one run.

Cumberworth took the loss for Rising Sun. He went 3.1 innings, allowing 11 runs (six earned) on seven hits, striking out two and walking four.

Batesville had 10 hits in the game. Schneider, Will Jaisle, and Loichinger each had two hits. Bohman, Schneider and Loichinger each drove in two runs for the Bulldogs. Schneider and Jack Grunkemeyer each stole multiple bases for Batesville.
