Here are the Bartlesville-area high school football power rankings entering Week 7

Barnsdall High School’s football team retains the No. 1 spot — but barely — in the Bartlesville E-E Week 7 Power Rankings.

Barnsdall (6-0) defeated a struggling but traditional powerhouse Pioneer-Pleasant Vale by a comfy margin, 42-14. However, Barnsdall’s hold on the upper rung was challenged by Bartlesville (31-28 win vs. Putnam City West) and Wesleyan Christian School (70-0 win vs. Bluejacket).

Bartlesville displayed incredible character in a fierce slug-fest with the Patriots – but, the Bruins were more than a three-point favorite going into the contest.

Wesleyan Christian School is back to full strength, at least in terms of its main skill players, and flexed its muscles in impressive fashion. But, Bluejacket was only 1-4 coming into the game and had given up almost 50 points per game.

Strengthening Barnsdall’s resume is the return last week of third-year starting quarterback Mav Lanphear, although he mostly carried the ball and excelled on defense.

Week 6 profile

UPSET OF THE WEEK: None

MOST IMPRESSIVE WIN: Barnsdall 42, Pioneer-Pleasant Vale 14 — Although off to a slow start in 2023, the Pioneer-PV Mustangs were 26-11 in the previous three seasons, including a state semifinal appearance. Barnsdall’s Maverick Lanphear and Easton Malone combined for 225 yards rushing and three touchdowns.

FIVE HUGE PLAYS

  • Bartlesville’s Sam Hoback picked off the ball in 4th period with the score tied, 28-28.

  • Barnsdall’s Brohk Townley stripped the ball from a punt returner and rumbled for a TD.

  • Bartlesville’s Adyn Peugh recorded a tackle-for-loss for 11 yards to force a punt and set up Bartlesville’s final TD drive.

  • Pawhuska’s Traven Richardson tallied a 100-yard pick-six.

  • Wesleyan Christian’s Ty Cloud ran for a 40-plus-yard gain on the team’s first offensive play.

ONE HUGE PLAYER

  • Dewey’s Bryce Sickler passed for a first down, ran for a first down, and caught a pass for a first down.

Week 7 high school football power rankings

1 (Last week, 1) — Barnsdall (6-0, 1-0) (Class B)

Last 3 games (3-0): Barnsdall 54, Wesleyan Christian 7; Barnsdall 32, Wetumka 20; Barnsdall 42, Pioneer-Pleasant Vale 14

This week (Thursday): At Regent Prep (4-1, 0-1)

TAKE: Even though it's just Week 7, this matchup could have a major bearing on who will win the District B-7 title. The importance of the return of Lanphear can't be overemphasized, although Braden Byers and Lincoln Gott have filled in admirably at QB

2 (2) — Bartlesville (3-3, 3-0) (Class 6A-II)

Last 3 games (3-0): Bartlesville 21, BT Washington 10; Bartlesville 62, US Grant 0; Bartlesville 31, Putnam City West 28

This week (Thursday): Host Stillwater (4-2, 3-0)

TAKE: No words are needed to magnify the intrigue of this game. Bartlesville is chasing its first district title since 2015; Stillwater is the defending Class 6A-II state champion. A Bruin win would rank among the most Herculean in school history.

3 (3) — Wesleyan Christian (4-2, 3-0) (Class C)

Last 3 games (3-0): WCS 21, Oaks-Mission 14; WCS 52, Copan 16; WCS 70, Bluejacket 0

This week (Thursday): At Wilson (Henryetta) (5-1, 3-0)

TAKE: The winner of this game is in the cockpit of the jet engine to the district title. With quarterback Ty Cloud and versatile dynamo Kael Siemers back in the lineup, WCS resembles the 2022 team that finished 10-2 (7-0 in district) and came up just shy of a third-round playoff berth.

4 (5) — Pawhuska (4-2, 3-0) (Class 2A)

Last 3 games (2-1): Woodland 38, Pawhuska 22; Pawhuska 44, Vinita 7; Pawhuska 50, Nowata 8

This week (Thursday): Host Salina (3-3, 1-2)

TAKE: Canyon Hindman continues to blossom at QB, passing for almost 300 last week. JoJo Hendren is the major component to perhaps Pawhuska's best pure running attack in six seasons.

5 (4) — Caney Valley (Kan.) (4-2, 2-0) (Class AA)

Last 3 games (2-1): CV 42, Cherryvale 6; CV 48, Neodesha 6; Olpe 27, CV 13

This week (Friday): At Fredonia (2-4, 0-3)

TAKE: The Caney Valley Pups spotted Olpe a 14-0 lead and just couldn't spring out of the hole. But, the Pups are favored to win this week and clinch a home-field playoff advantage. Pups' QB Garrett Watson has grown mightily into his role as a passer.

6 (6) — Copan (2-4, 1-2) (Class C)

Last 3 games (1-2): Copan 68, Bluejacket 20; Wesleyan Christian 52, Copan 16; Wilson (Henryetta) 50, Copan 30

This week (Friday): At South Coffeyville (0-7, 0-4)

TAKE: Copan is much more competitive than last season, but its mistakes have been its biggest obstacles to more success. The Hornets also have been without injured starters Shooter Brewington and lineman Jaxon White. The return of one or both this week would be a huge boost in a game they're already favored to win.

7 (7) — Nowata (3-3, 1-2) (Class 2A)

Last 3 games (1-2): Nowata 44, Caney Valley 8; Vinita 35, Nowata 8; Pawhuska 50, Nowata 8

This week (Thursday): Host Claremore-Sequoyah (4-2, 1-2)

TAKE: Nowata has collided with two rugged foes in the last two games. The Ironmen can make a breakthrough with a win this week.

8 (8) — Dewey (1-5, 0-3) (Class 3A)

Last 3 games (0-3): Jay 45, Dewey 15; Bristow 54, Dewey 13; Holland Hall 39, Dewey 0

This week (Thursday): Host Inola (1-4, 1-2)

TAKE: Dewey trailed only 14-0 late in the second quarter in last Friday's loss. The Doggers are still looking to put it all together for four quarters — which they could do this Thursday.

9 (9) — Oklahoma Union (0-6, 0-3) (Class A)

Last 3 weeks (0-3): Morrison 30, OUHS 8; Hominy 49, OUHS 6; Tonkawa 43, OUHS 0

This week (Thursday): Host Woodland (6-0, 3-0)

TAKE: The Cougars are still focused on that turnaround win. It appears to be a tough task this week.

10 (10) — Caney Valley Trojans (0-6, 0-3) (Class 2A)

Last 3 games (0-3): Chelsea 52, CV 15; Nowata 44, CV 8; Vinita 47, Caney Valley 0

This week (Thursday): Host Adair (3-3, 3-0)

TAKE: Caney Valley has battled hard every game, but a combination of inexperience, bad luck and killer schedule have combined to take their toll.
