Barstow’s Demetri Curiel is the Victorville Chevrolet High School Athlete of the Week

For the second straight week, the Victorville Chevrolet High School Athlete of the Week poll winner is a Barstow High School student.

Demetri Curiel, who is off to a scintillating start in his senior season, garnered 37% of 7,659 total votes cast by Daily Press readers. The star running back received 2,853 votes, beating out seven other high school athletes from across the High Desert.

Demetri finished second place in the poll in consecutive weeks. He’s also the third of four Athlete of the Week winners this school year to hail from Barstow High School. He joins teammate Samuelu Tofaeono and Ali’itasi Lealofi, last week’s winner.

Demetri is coming off a huge performance on the gridiron. He took 18 carries for 214 yards and two touchdowns in last week’s 34-6 victory over Burroughs.

Demetri is a big part of Barstow’s (4-1) success and is the seventh leading rusher in California, according to MaxPreps.com, with 957 rushing yards on 100 carries. He’s scored 13 touchdowns and is averaging 9.6 yards a carry.

Demetri beat out Serrano running back Carlos Amplayo, who came in second place with 20% at 1,548 total votes.

Lucerne Valley football star Isaiah Navarro received nearly 11% of votes (825) and Excelsior volleyball’s Faith Di Mola finished fourth overall with 10% (786).

The nominees were selected based on performances between September 11 through 16.

Nominations are based on information available to the Daily Press. All high school varsity players from the High Desert can be considered for the ballot.

Nominations must be received for consideration by Sunday morning following that week's games. Anyone can nominate an Athlete of the Week for every varsity sport.
