Barkby wins tournament flight at Hastings

HASTINGS — Two members of the Sturgis wrestling team wrestled in their respective weight class finals on Saturday in Hastings. The event was the Hastings High School Girls' Invitational and Sturgis had a pair of solid finishes.

Lola Barkby wrestled to first place overall at 120 pounds. She beat Emma Gibson of Middleville Thornapple Kellogg in the finals of the match by pinfall at 4:26 of the match. Prior to that, Barkby cruised to the finals with pins in two matches, both in the opening period.

Barkby has not yielded a point to any of her opponents in the last two tournaments.

Also finishing with a solid showing was Gracie Clark. She fell in the finals to Ava Pelton of Montague by a 12-7 decision. Prior to that, Clark won a match by pinfall and one by major decision.

Trojan girls finish with decent finish at Mel Wolf Open

Corey Fuller Tournament

The Sturgis boys wrestled at the Corey Fuller Tournament in Portage on Saturday as well. The Trojans finished eighth overall in the tournament with 92 points.

Winning was Three Rivers, the Wildcats piled up 321 points at the event. Grand Ledge was second with 195.5 points.

Jose Perez Galvan (106 pounds) and Angel Alvarez (150) each finished second overall for the Trojans. Kaiden Waldron (132) and Aaron Castro (157) each finished third overall.

Incredibly, Three Rivers finished with first place in eight flights for the day.

Earning championship medals for the Wildcats were Brody Morrill (106), Ethan Moreland (126), Ayden Keller (132), Landon Moreland (150), Louis Smith (165), Jeremiah Detwiler (175), Jaxon Smith (190) and Sammy Reynolds at 215.

Gaven Babcock (126) and Braylon Faile (157) finished second.

Constantine wins invitational

The Constantine wrestling team won the Greater Berrien County Invitational on Saturday. The Falcons soared to first place with 219.5 total points, beating St. Joseph in second with 189 and Stevensville-Lakeshore in third with 174.5 points.

Constantine finished with a pair of champions on the day.

Both Gregg Reed (190) and Bennett Vandenberg (285) brought home first place in their respective flights, each finishing with 4-0 records.

Bear Geibe (132) wrestled to second place. Koltin Gross (138) and Brody Jones (157) each finished in second place as well.

Fourth place finishers for the Falcons included Cody Laughman (150), Carter Godfrey (157) and Dathan Smith (175).
