A bald eagle sighting and more news in the latest Manitowoc outdoors report

This bald eagle posed along Meier Road Oct. 14 just long enough for Mary Brethouwer to snap the photo. This is as close to a wild bald eagle as we have ever been. Bald eagles hold a special sentimental place for Mary.

Oct. 14 was a rainy Saturday morning, but we had some errands to do.

I loaded up the truck with recyclables and Mary and I headed toward the town of Kossuth recycling center.

We turned off Polifka Road onto Meier Road and headed south. All at once, Mary caught her breath when she spotted an adult bald eagle sitting in the field right next to the ditch line. She took her foot off the gas and let the truck slow to a stop near the eagle.

The eagle sat there looking around as Mary frantically dug out her phone. She snapped the photo and then the eagle lifted up and flew to the west.

Mary is fond of bald eagles for sentimental reasons, so she was pleasantly surprised on how good the photo turned out.

Challenge The Outdoors hunters score 11 antlerless deer, seven bucks

Robby McClain was hunting in Wisconsin’s deer hunt for people with disabilities. He was hunting in the Gillette area when he harvested this non-typical 13-point buck. The buck had two beams on one side of his head and another one coming out the other side. Notice the dry velvet on the antler.

The largest buck was a 13-pointer shot by Robby McClain in the Gillette area. It was a very unusual rack, as it had two beams coming out of one side and another out the other side of his head.
