Austin Terveen's second half offensive outburst sparks O'Gorman's win over Lincoln

Standing at 6-foot-2, O’Gorman junior guard Austin Terveen has all the tools to dominate a basketball game.

He possesses speed, size, a long wingspan, a silky-smooth handle and with his leaping ability, he’s able to create a shot at any time.

In the second half of O’Gorman’s 57-47 win over Lincoln on Friday, Terveen put all those tools together in an offensive outburst that launched his Knights to victory.

He started his offensive explosion in the third quarter with a jab-step crossover into his patented midrange jumper. The junior said that’s a shot he’s been working on all his life, and it shows.

“I feel like that is my shot and I'm efficient from there,” Terveen said of his midrange game. “Lately, I've just really been dialing it in.”

Terveen scored O’Gorman’s next two baskets: a 3-pointer that he celebrated by turning to his bench as the crowd in the O'Gorman High School gym erupted, and then another moving midrange jumper. That stretch accounted for seven consecutive Knights points in the third quarter.

Most of his points were created on the move, whether off the dribble or fading in the air. Only a few of his baskets came from the open, catch-and-shoot variety but O’Gorman head coach Derek Robey said he has no issue with Terveen creating his own offense.

“I don't know so much that I care if he's (playing within) the offense,” Robey said. “When he wants to pull it, I'm OK with that because, at times, that's our best look.”

Although the midrange jumper is becoming more of a lost art in modern basketball it’s a vital part of Terveen’s game.

“That's the main key in my game,” he said. “I get by my defender, and when they turn their heads, I go up and I hit the mid-range. Most of the time it's open and if it's not, I'll get the layup.”

The Knights needed every bit of offense Terveen could provide to come out on top against the Patriots. They went into halftime only leading by five points --at one point in the second quarter Lincoln cut the lead to one -- but the juniors' offensive explosion and timely 3-point shooting helped O’Gorman break the game open. The Knights led 54-39 at one point in the fourth quarter.

Terveen finished the game with 23 points on 8-of-15 shooting and made 5-of-7 threes.

Robey was also proud of the effort from O’Gorman center Ryland Satter. Satter had the challenge of guarding Lincoln's 6-foot-6 center Garry Crowe.

“If there was a game ball, Ryland Satter deserved it,” the head coach said. “Our big guy, if you want to call him our big guy, because he's not even the tallest guy on the floor, but he competed hard tonight.”

Satter posted eight points, six rebounds and a steal.

Up next, the Knights play Sioux Falls Roosevelt on Saturday, Jan. 20.
