Augusta National Golf Club says PGA TOUR, LIV merger is a 'positive development'

News of the merger between the PGA TOUR and the rival LIV Golf league Tuesday shook the golf world.

It didn't take long for one of the heaviest voices in the game to weigh in. Augusta National Golf Club released a statement Tuesday, calling the outcome positive for the sport.

"As we have expressed previously, what makes golf special is its rich history and ability to bring people together. We are encouraged by this announcement, which represents a positive development in bringing harmony to men's professional golf," Chairman Fred Ridley said. "Augusta National Golf Club and the Masters Tournament are — and will remain — devoted to developing the game and celebrating its many virtues."

The final round of the 87th Masters Tournament seemed to be the apex of the rivalry between the two golf leagues, with the PGA Tour's Jon Rahm edging LIV's Brooks Koepka for the coveted green jacket. The competition between the two leagues was a topic of conversation all week at Augusta with equal amounts of avoidance and emotion. Tuesday's news is the first step as more details about the future of men's professional golf will likely be answered in the coming months.
