Attorney to lead Lawrence workshop about how families with LGBTQ+ members can protect their rights
Amid rising fears that same-sex marriage will be banned, Lawrence attorney David Brown will lead a workshop Aug. 13 in Lawrence focusing on how families with gay, lesbian and transgender members can protect themselves from threats to their rights.
The gathering will be from 10 a.m. to noon in the sanctuary at Trinity Episcopal Church, 1011 Vermont.
The Very Rev. Rob Baldwin, rector of Trinity Episcopal Church, said in a news release that he arranged the workshop in light of a same-sex marriage he officiated in July, and another planned for later this month.
The workshop comes at a time when the recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling overturning the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision regarding abortion has triggered fears the court will overturn its 2015 Obergefell v. Hodges ruling legalizing same-sex marriage.
Attendance is free of charge, but participants must pre-register.

In addition to talking about safeguarding the rights of LGBTQ+ families, Brown will take questions from those present.
Brown is an adjunct professor at the University of Kansas School of Law, teaching a seminar on LGBTQ+ issues, and has written and lectured extensively on the areas of privacy, family law and ethics. He assists both traditional and non-traditional families.
