UPDATE: Patel of Redding Christian wins first Shasta Family YMCA Athlete of the Week for fall

Redding Christian senior setter Sia Patel was voted the Shasta Family YMCA Athlete of the Week by readers for her performance last week.

Patel received 1,384 votes. Foothill junior middle blocker and outside hitter Grace McQuoid received 990 votes, U-Prep senior outside hitter Kaitlyn Cabral had 536 votes and Central Valley senior libero Madison Whitehouse gained 188 votes.

Patel had consistent sets and gave Redding Christian the boost it needed to win five games at Hug High School in Sparks, Nevada last Saturday. The Lions beat Loyalton, Sierra Lutheran of Carson City, Nevada, Coleville, Hug and Sage Ridge of Reno. Patel had 43 assists, nine aces and eight kills during the tourney. Redding Christian beat Sage Ridge to win the Proctor R. Hug High School Volleyball Invitational title.

Here are the accomplishments from the other Athlete of the Week nominees.

Kaitlyn Cabral

School: U-Prep

Sport: Volleyball

Position: Outside hitter

Team contributions: Cabral led U-Prep with 107 total kills and the Panthers won the Chico Tournament last Saturday. The defending CIF State Division IV champions won six games to start the season against Red Bluff, Eureka, Colfax, Franklin of Elk Grove, Calaveras of San Andreas and Foothill.

U-Prep didn't drop a set during the tournament and beat Foothill in the championship 25-23, 25-20. U-Prep has won 23 straight matches and hasn't lost since Sept. 28, 2021.

Sport: Volleyball

Position: Outside hitter and middle blocker

Team contributions: McQuoid led Foothill's attack at the Chico Tournament last Saturday. McQuoid finished the tournament with 30 kills, 20 digs and seven blocks. Foothill finished the tournament 5-1 with victories over Corning, Trinity, Nevada Union of Grass Valley, Sutter and Chico.

Madison Whitehouse

School: Central Valley

Sport: Volleyball

Position: Libero

Team contributions: Whitehouse controlled the back row for Central Valley in wins over Oroville on the road last Tuesday and at home against Corning last Thursday. Whitehouse had 20 digs and 20 serve receives against Corning.
