Aston Villa vs Liverpool LIVE!

Jhon Duran scored twice in the final 10 minutes to earn Aston Villa a thrilling 3-3 draw against Liverpool which moves them closer to Champions League qualification.

Villa looked dead and buried as Emiliano Martinez's astonishing gaffe handed the Reds a second-minute goal, which was cancelled out by Youri Tielemans, before strikes from Cody Gakpo and Jarell Quansah put them 3-1 up in Jurgen Klopp's final away game in charge.

But Duran climbed off the bench to score twice in four minutes and put Villa on the brink of qualification for the Champions League for the first time.

The draw means they will be guaranteed a top-four spot if Tottenham fail to beat Manchester City on Tuesday night.

Aston Villa vs Liverpool highlights

  • GOAL! Martinez howler in second minute

  • GOAL! Tielemans levels against run of play

  • GOAL! VAR confirms Gakpo tap-in

Champions League beckons for Aston Villa after late fightback

22:21 , Marc Mayo

Aston Villa may not have secured Champions League qualification in their 3-3 draw with Liverpool on Monday night, but the nature of their spirited late comeback meant they at least signed off on a superb year at Villa Park on a high.

It certainly didn’t look to be heading that way when Emi Martinez put through his own net in the second minute, but Villa clawed their way back into it via Youri Tielemans’ strike.

Liverpool looked to have secured the win via goals from Cody Gakpo and Jarell Quansah before Jhon Duran emerged off the bench to snatch a stunning point with a late brace.

Thanks for joining us tonight and we’ll be back tomorrow to cover Spurs vs Man City...

John McGinn reacts to the draw

22:17 , Marc Mayo

“A brilliant effort, I know we got a bit of fortune with the third goal but it’s been a tough couple of weeks.

“Boys are out on their feet, Youri’s just back and playing through the pain barrier...

“Big Jhon is a bit nuts, he can be a nightmare to have on your team but the first was a top finish. We’ll have to try and keep his feet on the ground next couple of days.

“Some of us have never been close to Champions League football, it’s massive. What’s gone under the radar is the injuries, but the manager has a no-excuse mentality.

“We’ve floated under the radar and we’ll have the Man City tops on tomorrow night!”

How the table looks

22:14 , Marc Mayo

Aston Villa hold a five-point lead over Tottenham in fourth place.

Spurs have two games to go and must win them both, against Manchester City and Sheffield United, while either overturning an eight-goal deficit in goal difference if Villa draw at Crystal Palace on the last day OR two wins will do it if Villa lose in south London.

Full time!

Aston Villa fight back late on to claim a 3-3 draw at home to Liverpool.

Aston Villa look ragged

21:02 , Marc Mayo

All is not lost for Aston Villa, who will be disappointed to have conceded the second goal after fighting back to equalise against the run of play.

They really should have levelled up again when Diego Carlos managed to shoot wide from a yard out, particularly as it took the ball off Ollie Watkins.

You can see why they’ve been described as running on empty as they stare down a fourth defeat in a row.

Liverpool good value for their lead

20:56 , Marc Mayo

The away team have certainly been the better of the two sides and are causing issues with some fairly straightforward runs in behind.

But it’s been another case of them failing to kill off their opponents, having only scored via an early Emi Martinez own goal and Cody Gakpo’s tap-in.

You can’t see them winning this without scoring at least another goal.

Half-time!

A fairly low-key period of stoppage time draws an entertaining half to a close.

Liverpool ahead at the break!

Aston Villa 1-2 Liverpool | 45+4 mins

20:49 , Marc Mayo

Issue for John McGinn, who looks to be feeling the coming together with Alexis Mac Allister a little bit earlier.

Looked legal but he’s adamant there was a cheeky elbow in there. Wouldn’t catch him doing anything of the sort, of course.

Aston Villa 1-2 Liverpool | 45 mins

Leon Bailey tries to trick his way into space from a free-kick but the pass is poor.

Liverpool come forward and the flag goes up to halt a poorly executed counter.

CHANCE!

20:36 , Marc Mayo

CHANCE!

Painful-sounding one for Leon Bailey as Alexis Mac Allister catches him in a run down the right flank. He’ll continue though as John McGinn lines up the free-kick.

Decent position and Liverpool struggle to clear...

Bailey is played in and cuts a ball into the six-yard box - but Diego Carlos and Ollie Watkins can’t finish it off!

Aston Villa 1-2 Liverpool | 33 mins

20:34 , Marc Mayo

Kieran McKenna, Ipswich coach, and Gareth Southgate, England manager, have been spotted by the TV cameras in free-flowing conversation a couple of times tonight.

Ollie Watkins, Harvey Elliott, Jarell Quansah and Joe Gomez among those perhaps being scouted by the Three Lions boss.

John McGinn, who could face England in the Euros, drives a shot into a Liverpool body as Villa look to assert from authority on the game.

Watch Cody Gakpo put Liverpool back ahead

Liverpool’s goals have crossed the line with a combined speed of about 8mph tonight!

Aston Villa 1-2 Liverpool | 28 mins

20:29 , Marc Mayo

Well it’s been an entertaining first half hour in the Midlands.

Villa are very much there for the taking if Liverpool can keep the pressure up, pretty much any run in behind is going untracked by the home team.

Liverpool lead after the green light from VAR!

It could be Joe Gomez from the initial effort or it could be Cody Gakpo with the finish who could have infringed upon the regulations.

Half chance for Ollie Watkins after Ezri Konsa’s sharp tackle wins the ball.

Sent through by Leon Bailey, he gets the finish all wrong. Looks like he tried to chip it, but it’s easily blocked.

Aston Villa 1-1 Liverpool | 19 mins

20:20 , Marc Mayo

Liverpool waste the chance to play Mohamed Salah in behind before Villa resume their pressure.

The hosts are well and truly in this game now, having barely been a presence before scoring.

Youri Tielemans wins a foul after a hospital pass from Pau Torres put him under pressure 30 yards from goal, but again Villa give it away from the free-kick.

Watch Youri Tielemans score for Aston Villa

20:18 , Marc Mayo

A fine finish but not much effort from a couple of Liverpool defenders to block the shot.

Aston Villa 1-1 Liverpool | 16 mins

20:16 , Marc Mayo

Well this has summed up Liverpool’s season a fair bit. Plenty of attacking threat, a breakthrough, some missed chances to build on their lead, and conceding a sloppy goal out of nowhere.

GGGGOOOOOAAALLLL!!! Aston Villa 1-1 Liverpool | Tielemans, 12'

20:13 , Marc Mayo

VILLA LEVEL OUT OF NOWHERE!

Ollie Watkins glides down the left flank, into the box and he picks out Youri Tielemans to arrow into the bottom corner.

Aston Villa 0-1 Liverpool | 12 mins

Flag is up as Liverpool come close. Luis Diaz borderline as his header is parried to Cody Gakpo, who hits the post on the rebound.

Harvey Elliott steals the ball inside Villa’s half and rushes into the box, but he loses the physical battle with Diego Carlos.

Forward come the home team and Moussa Diaby crosses low for Leon Bailey... he scuffs it wide.

Aston Villa 0-1 Liverpool | 7 mins

20:08 , Marc Mayo

Liverpool remain well on top and Emi Martinez combines with Youri Tielemans to deal with a threatening dink into the box.

Villa fans try to rally their players but they give the ball away quickly... those cheers may quickly turn to frustration for some corners of the home crowd.

Watch Emi Martinez own goal

20:06 , Marc Mayo

One of the howlers of the season...

Aston Villa 0-1 Liverpool | 4 mins

Almost 2-0!

Mohamed Salah skips inside freely from the right flank and his shot flicks narrowly wide off Pau Torres.

Aston Villa 0-1 Liverpool | 3 mins

20:04 , Marc Mayo

The home team had barely touched the ball by the time Mohamed Salah and Harvey Elliott linked up down the right.

The latter’s cross deflected off Pau Torres and Emi Martinez looked primed to catch it easily... yet squandered the ball over his own line.

A dreadful start for a Villa team not in great form.

Simon Hooper is our referee tonight and his whistle gets the ball rolling...

Here come the teams!

19:56 , Marc Mayo

Villa Park is packed to the rafters and the home fans are flying their flags proudly as the teams emerge from the tunnel!

Ten-minute warning!

19:50 , Marc Mayo

It’s almost time to greet the teams at Villa Park.

A reminder: Liverpool will finish third in the Premier League no matter what happens in their final two games, but this is Jurgen Klopp’s final road trip at Reds boss.

Villa, meanwhile, will secure fourth place and Champions League football with a win.

A loss opens the door to Tottenham and a draw means Spurs will have to win both of their games to overtake Villa, along with Unai Emery’s side losing on the final day AND overturning what is currently an eight-goal deficit in goal difference.

Jurgen Klopp hints at thoughts on Arsenal treatment of Unai Emery

19:48 , Marc Mayo

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp believes some clubs paid the price for not proving willing to “wait” for former Arsenal boss Unai Emery to deliver success.

“He is one of the best we have in the business,” said Klopp.

“Some clubs weren't ready to wait for it, but looking back, maybe these clubs would have made different decisions.

“I've known him for so long. He always had a clear idea. Won plenty of times with Sevilla.

"Really tricky with Villarreal. He always organises his team really well. The job he is doing is absolutely exceptional. We all know how difficult it is to qualify for the Champions League and that he will probably do that is absolutely exceptional."

Why Andrew Robertson misses out tonight

19:43 , Marc Mayo

Latest reports reassuring Liverpool fans over Andrew Robertson.

He’s said to just be suffering from a minor issue which the Reds won’t risk given this is ultimately a dead rubber for them.

But he’s set to return to the team on Sunday for the final game of the season.

Paul Merson explains why Arsenal fans must support Liverpool

19:35 , Marc Mayo

Former Arsenal star Paul Merson has told fans they have to want Liverpool to beat Aston Villa to aid their Premier League title challenge.

Villa Park will be bouncing for the visit of Jurgen Klopp’s side as a win will guarantee a top-four finish and Champions League football in the west Midlands next season.

Such a scenario would lead to Tottenham having practically nothing to play for when they host Manchester City a day later, a game in which Arsenal will be praying for their neighbours to take a result from the defending champions.

“If Villa get beat tomorrow, Tottenham are still in the race [for the Champions League],” Merson explained on Sky Sports.

“So they need to get something [against City], if Villa get beat. Every Arsenal fan needs Villa to get beat tomorrow. If Liverpool can get a result, Tottenham have to stay hungry on Tuesday.”

A booking for Jurgen Klopp tonight and he will receive a touchline ban for the next Premier League game.

That, of course, would be his farewell match at Anfield on the final day.

Chatting to Sky Sports before the game, Klopp spoke of how he’ll handle himself with the referee.

He replies: “Yeah and they gave me Simon Hooper...

“That’s obviously the biggest challenge they could find. I’m alright, I should be fine.”

Youri Tielemans returns for Villa

19:12 , Marc Mayo

Aston Villa switch to a 4-3-3 formation with Youri Tielemans back from injury.

Matty Cash is the man to make way.

Andrew Robertson sits this one out having missed training at the back end of last week with an injury issue.

Team news due out in a little while and Aston Villa have a handful of players they’re monitoring.

“Each day is going to be very important because some players are with a small injury, having pain and there’s not a date when they will come back,” manager Unai Emery said at the end of last week.

“Like [Nicolo] Zaniolo, he’s close but until he’s feeling comfortable with his pain then he’s not available to play. Hopefully, he can progress.

“[Youri] Tielemans is close; Alex Moreno has a small injury and he needs some days, maybe he could be available.”

Mixed emotions for Jurgen Klopp on Villa Park bow

18:15 , Marc Mayo

Jurgen Klopp has mixed feelings about Villa Park as he returns for the final time as Liverpool manager.

The ground witnessed a crucial moment in their title-winning season when Andy Robertson and Sadio Mane scored in the final three minutes to snatch a 2-1 win in November 2018 which extended their unbeaten start to that campaign and felt hugely significant.

However, the following season they returned as champions and were incredibly thumped 7-2.

Asked about his memories of Villa Park Klopp said: "You talk about that game (the 2-1 win). We had another night at Aston Villa...

"True, it was a really special game when we won 2-1. At half-time we had a little situation in the dressing room - a little argument between two players but you will not get the names from me (Robertson has previously admitted it was him and Mane) - and then we could calm it down and turned the game around, which was really special.

"That's when you go for absolutely everything, when everything is on the edge and these kinds of things can happen as long as you settle as quick as possible.

"That was a very important one, a great feeling after the game absolutely.

"This group of players was really special. It meant so much and things can happen when you work together for a long time especially, that's normal."

Aston Villa ace rates Jurgen Klopp among the best

18:08 , Marc Mayo

John McGinn has said that the Premier League as a whole will miss Jurgen Klopp.

The Liverpool boss takes charge of his final Reds away game tonight before a fond farewell on Sunday.

"They are certainly slightly different but both of them are up there with the best managers in the world," he said.

"The league has been very lucky to have Klopp. He has obviously got an identity and a really strong team.

"He will be missed in the league, definitely."
