Sexton's Isaiah Moore, center, and the rest of the J-Dubbs celebrate after beating Charlotte on Friday, Sept. 15, 2023, at Sexton High School in Lansing.

Sexton football is enjoying its best start since finishing as the Division 4 state runner-up in 2014.

And the early-season success that included a 28-0 victory over Charlotte last week in a matchup of unbeatens has led to the J-Dubbs moving into the top 10 of their division in the latest Associated Press rankings.

Sexton is ranked No. 9 in Division 4 this week along with Chelsea. The J-Dubbs (4-0), who are tied atop the CAAC White standings with Portland, are among 11 Greater Lansing teams that appear in the top 10 of their divisions.

Mason and Ithaca continue to lead the way and are both ranked No. 2 in their divisions. Mason, which is tied atop the CAAC Red standings, is No. 2 in Division 3. Ithaca, which is off to a 2-0 start in TVC White play, is No. 2 in Division 8.

Corunna remains in the top five in Division 5 and is No. 4. Fowler is No. 4 in Division 8.

CAAC White co-leader Portland is No. 6 in Division 7, four spots ahead of CMAC leader Pewamo-Westphalia at No. 10.

Receiving votes outside the top 10 in their divisions are Grand Ledge (Division 1) and Lansing Catholic (Division 6).

8-player teams gaining attention

Greater Lansing has four 8-player teams who are part of the top 10 this week. Carson City-Crystal, which is in its debut season of 8-man football, is No. 7 in Division 1 after knocking off last year's state runner-up Merrill. Unbeaten Maple Valley is No. 10 in 8-man Division 1.

Portland St. Patrick, which matched its win total from last season with its win over Morrice last week, moved to No. 8 in 8-man Division 2. Fulton is up to No. 10 in Division 2 after improving to 4-0 with a forfeit win.

Morrice is receiving votes in Division 2.
