Arrow soccer teams fall to Pierre and a full slate of area high school cross country meets

WATERTOWN — Sioux Falls Lincoln, the likely Class AA favorite, remained unbeaten in duals with a 9-0 victory over Watertown in high school girls tennis on Tuesday at the Highland Park Courts.

Lincoln improved to 5-0 in duals on the season and dropped Watertown to 4-2.

"Lincoln is a very solid teams and they came out with more energy than we did today," said Watertown head coach Ryan Zink.

The Patriots posted two-set victories in the first five flights of singles and first two flights of doubles.

Watertown's Karlie Schulte split sets with Lincoln's Angela Ge in the sixth flight of singles before Ge won the tiebreaker 10-4. Ge and Julia Hedrick lost a second-set tiebreaker to Watertown's Cayda Weiss and Schulte at No. 3 doubles, but the Lincoln rebounded to win the the third-set tiebreaker 11-9.

"I need to do a better job of getting the girls ready to go from the start. All three doubles teams got off to slow starts and then played better as the match went on," said Zink. "Cayda and Karlie played one of their best matches of the year in doubles and Karlie lost a tough third-set tiebreaker in singles as well."

The Arrows travel to Sioux Falls on Thursday to face Sioux Falls Washington and O'Gorman.

Watertown Boys Golf

ABERDEEN — The hottest and best Class AA boys' golf team in the state right now is Watertown High School.

The Arrows shot a 4-under 280 at the Lee Park Golf Course on Tuesday and won the 10-team Hub City Invite by 18 shots over Pierre. It was the third tourney win a row for Watertown.

Jake Olson of Watertown was attempting to win his third tournament in row and shot a 3-under 68 along with Pierre's Nick Bothun. Bothun won a seven-hole playoff over Olson to win medalist honors.

Kaden Rylance was third (69), Ty Lenards fourth (71), Jaden Solheim fifth (72) and Jerome Zebroski sixth (75) for Watertown. Gabe Norberg took 18th with a 79.

Milbank also competed and took fifth with a 340. Jonathon DeBoer led the Bulldogs with a 79 (17th). Charlie Peery and Owen Fischer each shot 85s.

Watertown Soccer

PIERRE — Pierre posted 3-0 (girls) and 6-4 (boys) Eastern South Dakota Conference high school soccer victories over Watertown on Tuesday.

Madi Enstad made 14 saves for the Arrow girls, who slipped top 2-4 overall and 2-1 in the ESD. Mya York, Aspen Reynolds, Katie Fischer and Shelby Spilde each had shots on net for the Arrows, who finished with 10 shots.

Riley Fischer scored two goals and Tommy Foley and Braxten Endres each one for the Arrow boys (3-1, 1-2). Endres also had two assists and goalkeeper Owen Muller made five saves.

"Pierre did a good job of controlling the game, especially in the midfield," said Watertown boys head coach Jesse Hauck. "We did not play together and we did not communicate especially on the back end and gave up goals. We have to play together and communicated. We did that last Thursday at Brookings. Unfortunately, we didn't do it tonight."

Watertown visits Harrisburg on Thursday (boys at 5 and girls at 7 p.m.).

Sioux Falls Charger Boys Golf Invite

HARRISBURG — Sioux Valley shot 325 and placed fifth out of 15 teams in the Charger Boys Golf Invite on Tuesday at the Spring Creek Golf Course.

Vermillion won with a 312 score. Dakota Valley followed at 318, West Central 319 and Sioux Falls Christian 320.

Eli Anema of Sioux Falls Christian won medalist honors with a 4-under 68, winning by three shots.

Tate Steffensen placed eighth (76), Boden Schiller 23rd (83), Jameson Degen 27th (83) and Maverick Nelson 28th (83) to lead Sioux Valley.

Estelline-Hendricks Cross Country

HENDRICKS, Minn. — Deuel's Jaycee Hourigan and Estelline-Hendricks' Cooper Schaefer won individual races Tuesday at the Hendricks Golf Club.

Schaefer topped 19 runners to win the boys' 5,000-meter race in 17;34.58. Landen Johnson of Deubrook Area was second in 18:04.70, followed by Tyson Hagberg of Deuel (18:58.68), Colton Trooien of Deubrook Area (19:14.67) and Camden Hobbs of Estelline-Hendricks (19:20.64).

Hourigan won the girls' 5,000 in 20:02.44, followed by Kylee Johnson of Deubrook Area (21:30.66), Malayna Hemmen of Elkton-Lake Benton (22:34.79), Isabella Imm of Deuel (23:00.73) and Claire Dagel of Estelline-Hendricks (23:27.56).

Deuel's girls and Estelline-Hendricks' boys won team titles.

McCook Central-Montrose Cross Country

SALEM — De Smet runners competed Tuesday in the McCook Central-Montrose Invite at the McCook Country Club.

Tavin Schroeder of Freeman Academy-Marion (boys, 16:55.16) and Kinsey Evans of Chamberlain (girls, 19:20.82) won individual races. Chamberlain's girls and Flandreau's boys won team titles.

Bella Wilkiinson placed 16th in the girls' 5,000-meter race (23:24.43) to lead De Smet. Connor Giedd led De Smet's boys by placing 25th (20:35.03).

Milbank "Breathe Easy" Cross Country

MILBANK — Payton Brown and Ashlynn Batchelor of Milbank won the varsity 4,000-meter races on Monday in the Milbank "Breathe Easy" Cross Country Meet at the Whetstone Creek Golf Course.

Brown won the 35-runner boys division with a time of 13:30.92 and Batchelor the 21-runner girls division with a time of 16:17.33.

Milbank Girls Tennis

MILBANK — Milbank suffered 5-4 losses to Madison on Monday and Aberdeen Roncalli on Tuesday.

On Monday, the two teams split the six singles matches and Madison won two of the three doubles matches. Roncalli went 4-2 in singles and 1-2 in doubles against Milbank.

Milbank also lost 6-1 in a dual last week against Lac qui Parle Valley (Minn.). Karels provided the lone win (6-2, 6-0) at No. 1 singles.

Lakeview Invitational Cross Country

COTTONWOOD, Minn. — Canby-Minneota's boys and girls teams each finished second Monday in the Lakeview Invitational at the Cottonwood Country Club.

Redwood Valley won the girls division by a 21-36 margin over C-M. Redwood Valley also won the boys division by a 22-54 margin.

Mya Pesek finished sixth in the girls' 5,000-meter race (22:01) to lead C-M. Claire Stoks (eighth, 22:59) and Ava Daqnielson (ninth, 23:07) added top-10 finishes.

Zach Ourada took fifth (17:47) and Blake Giese sixth (18:38) to lead C-M in the boys' 5,000.
