Arkansas basketball assistant Gus Argenal leaves for head coaching job
Eric Musselman is in the market for a new assistant coach on his staff following Wednesday’s news that Gus Argenal would be taking the head coaching job at Cal State San Bernadino.
Cal State San Bernadino sent out a press release – which was then posted on the team’s official Twitter account – confirming Argenal as the school’s next coach. Shortly after, Eric Musselman and numerous others sent tweets out congratulating Argenal on his promotion after spending two seasons with Arkansas basketball.

“I want to thank athletic director Shareef Amer, President Morales, and the rest of the dedicated hiring committee for this incredible opportunity. I could not be more excited to be a part of a campus community that gives its student-athletes an elite collegiate experience,” Argenal said in the press release.
“My team will be aggressive and attack on both sides of the ball utilizing a position-less style that takes advantage of mismatches and plays with great pace for 40 minutes. Go Yotes!”
The move makes sense considering that Argenal, like Eric Musselman, is from the West Coast and the majority of his coaching career has been spent in that region. Before arriving in Fayetteville, Argenal spent two seasons at Cal State Fullerton as the associate head coach and was an assistant with Musselman at Musselman for two seasons before that. Overall, Argenal has 19 seasons of coaching experience at the collegiate level.
At this time, there is no official word on who Musselman and Arkansas basketball are looking to fill the now-open assistant coach position.
