The Arizona Republic's Super 10 girls high school soccer rankings, Dec. 12, 2023

The Arizona high school winter soccer season is officially underway with the first few weeks completed and to help get things started, The Arizona Republic looks at the 10 best teams at this early point of the season. We call it our Super 10 rankings for the 2023-24 season, which combines the 6A, 5A, 4A and 3A conferences.

1. Phoenix Xavier Preparatory Gators (2-0-1)

Opened the season with a 3-1 win over Tempe Corona del Sol before drawing with Phoenix Desert Vista 0-0 the next week. Just beat Anthem Boulder Creek 7-0. Has a long break from competition coming up.

2. Gilbert Perry Pumas (3-1-2)

Began the season with a win over Mesa Red Mountain and then headed out of state for a tournament in Southern California. Played draws against Santiago (California) 1-1 and Mission College Preparatory (California) 0-0 in the first two rounds, lost to Punahou (Hawaii) 1-0. Took down Mesa Westwood 8-0 this week.

3. Phoenix Pinnacle Pioneers (5-1)

Made a run to the finals of the Coyote Classic Tournament, taking down Gilbert Campo Verde, Scottsdale Chaparral, Mesa Red Mountain, Scottsdale Notre Dame Preparatory before losing to Chandler Hamilton 3-2. Beat Gilbert Highland 4-1 this week.

4. Chandler Hamilton Huskies (1-1)

Won the Coyote Classic Tournament, beating Scottsdale Notre Dame Preparatory, Phoenix Desert Vista, ALA Queen Creek, Scottsdale Chaparral and Phoenix Pinnacle. Did lose 4-1 to Pinnacle in regular season play in the middle of the week-long Coyote Classic. Beat Phoenix Maryvale 5-0 this week.

5. Scottsdale Chaparral Firebirds (2-2-1)

Opened the season with a 2-1 win over Gilbert Campo Verde. Played Queen Creek Casteel in a rematch of last year’s 5A state championship game, which resulted in a 2-2 draw. Lost 1-0 to Chandler Hamilton in the Coyotes Classic Tournament.

6. Queen Creek Casteel Colts (6-0-1)

After drawing Scottsdale Chaparral in the season opener, the Colts have been on fire, winning six straight games. The scores of the games during the win streak: 10-0, 2-1, 6-0, 3-0, 7-0, 7-0. Just won the Ben Franklin Winter Classic.

7. Chandler Basha Bears (8-0-1)

The only team in the state already at eight wins this early season. The only game they haven’t won was a 0-0 draw with Scottsdale Desert Mountain on Dec. 2, which Basha just avenged with a 2-1 win last week.

8. Scottsdale Notre Dame Preparatory (3-2)

Fell 2-1 to Chandler Hamilton to start the season, but followed up that game with a 5-1 win against Gilbert Higley and a 7-0 win against ALA Queen Creek. Beat Phoenix Desert Vista before losing to Phoenix Pinnacle in the Coyote Classic Tournament.

9. Phoenix Desert Vista Thunder (2-2-1)

Played the top team in the state, Phoenix Xavier Preparatory, to a 0-0 draw after losing to Chandler Hamilton to open the season. Lost to Scottsdale Notre Dame Preparatory 4-1 in the Coyote Classic Tournament.

10. Goodyear Millennium Tigers (5-1)

Started off the year with a 5-0 win against Peoria Centennial and just recently beat Glendale Ironwood 10-0. The lone loss of the season came against Scottsdale Desert Mountain. Has one more game before a break from competition.

Others to watch: Scottsdale Desert Mountain, Tucson Salpointe Catholic, Chandler Arizona College Preparatory, Gilbert Christian, Phoenix Northwest Christian, Goodyear Desert Edge, Cave Creek Cactus Shadows, Sahuarita Walden Grove, Queen Creek Benjamin Franklin.
