Arizona’s highly anticipated high school sports seasons are approaching, and the calendar of events has been released with practices beginning Monday, July 24.

There are division committees that each help create the schedule for the fall, winter, and spring seasons. Divisions 6A-4A make their calendar and 3A-1A have their requirements for setting their schedule. These committees consider parameters and timelines set by the Arizona Interscholastic Association.

The Phoenix area has been dealing with record-breaking heat for several weeks which will affect outdoor sports especially. Beach volleyball is a year-round sport that will be impacted by increased heat in the summertime annually.

“It’s almost comical you can time it to the beginning of the summer when we switch from evening practices to morning practices. A big issue is you want to be off the sand by the time it hits 95 degrees,” said Tim McHale, head beach volleyball coach at Xavier Prep.

The fall season includes football, girls' volleyball, badminton, cross country, swimming, golf, and soccer. This will also be the first season flag football will be played as a sanctioned sport by the AIA.

Winter sports include basketball, soccer, and wrestling. Spring season will conclude the high school season with track and field, softball, tennis, golf, baseball, golf, beach volleyball and boys' volleyball.

The calendar that was released has the dates for all sports in all three seasons of the scholastic year. The 2023-24 calendar can be found at https://aiaonline.org/files/17810/season-dates-calendar.pdf.
