Arizona Cardinals RB Marlon Mack has torn Achilles, is out for the entire 2023 season

The Arizona Cardinals suffered their first serious injury of training camp when it was learned that recently acquired running back Marlon Mack tore his left Achilles during practice on Tuesday and will be lost for the entire season. Coach Jonathan Gannon announced the news on Wednesday, the team’s last day of camp at State Farm Stadium.

“Terrible,” Gannon said when asked for his reaction to Mack’s injury, which he sustained during just his third practice of camp.

Mack, 27, was running a short screen route midway through practice when he turned to catch a pass thrown behind him and he slipped and fell. He immediately reached for his knee and was helped to the locker room. Later, he was seen leaving the stadium on crutches wearing a walking boot.

Mack, a former 1,000-yard rusher for the Colts entering his seventh NFL season, was expected to win the No. 2 rushing job behind starter James Conner. At present, Corey Clement and Keaontay Ingram are now competing for that role as they were before Mack’s signing last Friday.

According to reports, Mack signed a one-year deal with the Cardinals for $1.1 million.

The team has two other running backs in second-year pro Ty’Son Williams and undrafted rookie Emari Demercado. It isn’t known if Arizona will attempt to sign another free-agent veteran to replace Mack on the roster.

“We’ll see,” Gannon said. “We’ll always try to do what’s best for the team.”

Later Wednesday, the Cardinals added Stevie Scott to the roster and placed Mack on injured reserve. Scott most recently played in the USFL, but has NFL experience with the Saints and Broncos.
