Area Roundup: Serrano upsets Sultana in Mojave River League wrestling showdown

The Serrano wrestling team pulled off its first-ever Mojave River League victory over Sultana on Thursday night.

The Diamondbacks topped Sultana 48-31 to keep their hopes of a first-ever MRL wrestling title alive.

The Diamondbacks won seven matches by pin fall and came from behind for the victory after Sultana went on a run midway through the dual.

Sultana’s Joseph Robles kicked off the action at Serrano by scoring a 7-4 decision over Anthony DeLeon at 220 pounds in the opening match of the dual.

Serrano picked up three-straight victories, pins by Angelo Franco (285) and Brent Cannon (113).

Sultana went on a five-match win run to take the lead.

But Serrano picked up five more pinvfall victories from Jacob Bocanegra (152), Alex Martin (160), Blake Chaffee (170), Tanner Chaffee (182) and Richard Arujao (195) to seal the deal.

The Diamondbacks are back in action this week against Oak Hills. A victory over the Bulldogs (4-0 MRL) would clinch at least a share of Serrano’s first-ever MRL title. Serrano ends the season against Hesperia the following week.

Hesperia 2, Apple Valley 1

At Hesperia, the Scorpions improved to 4-0 in Mojave River League action with a victory over the Sun Devils at home Friday afternoon.

Memo Ramirez put Hesperia on the board on an assist from Calab Rutan. Nick Garcia sealed the deal in the second half by scoring on an assist from Alfredo Lopez.

Ray Jauregui recorded four saves in goal.

Hesperia scored a victory earlier in the week on the road against Burroughs. Jauregui also tallied four saves in the 4-0 victory over the Burros.

Brandon Zavala scored two goals, and Ramriez and Jacob Loza also scored.

The Scorpions (10-3) travel to Sultana on Wednesday.

PREP GIRLS SOCCER

Sultana 2, Serrano 1

At Hesperia, the Sultans upset the Diamondbacks as Jayden Price and Giada Sadach each scored a goal Friday afternoon.

Serrano entered the contest tied for first place in the Mojave River League standings after playing Apple Valley to a scoreless draw earlier in the week.

Jessica Madera and Laisha Hernandez each assisted on a goal for the Sultans.

Both teams are back in action Wednesday. Sultana (4-5-4, 2-2 MRL) travel to Hesperia, while the Diamondbacks (7-3-4, 2-1-1 MRL) host Oak Hills.

Oak Hills 8, Burroughs 0

At Oak Hills, the Bulldogs took possession of second place in the Mojave River League standings with a victory over the Burros on Friday.

Sydney Middaugh led the way for Oak HIlls with two goals, and Mollie Zielke tallied four assists.

Alyssa Vernon, Danielle Perez, Sam Middaugh, Nathaly Andrezjewski, Meah Quihuis and Takoah Castillo also scored a goal, and Alexia Garcia added two assists.

The Bulldogs (7-4, 3-1 MRL) travel to Serrano on Wednesday.

Oak Hills 69, Burroughs 12

At Oak Hills, the Bulldogs breezed past the Burros on Thursday to clinch at least a share of the Mojave River League title.

Oak Hills (4-0 MRL) wraps up league action this week against Serrano, and would win the title outright with a victory.
