Area roundup (Jan. 22): Four girls hoops teams earn wins; Pine Forest boys lose close game

Girls Basketball

Gulf Breeze 52, Central 15: Gulf Breeze has now won its last two games after defeating Central on Monday on the road.

No stats were provided from the contest.

The Dolphins, now sitting at 14-6 (4-3 District 1-6A), return to action on Wednesday at Milton with a 6:45 p.m. tip-off. Central (10-9, 1-1 District 1-1A), is scheduled to host Jay on Friday at 6 p.m.

Fort Walton Beach 42, Navarre 35: A fairly close first half saw Fort Walton Beach open things up late in the contest, and the Vikings were victorious over the Raiders on Monday.

FWB led 10-1 after the first frame, before Navarre started to crawl back, trailing just 16-15 at halftime.

The Raiders led 19-18 late in the third quarter, but that's when FWB responded offensively. The Vikings took a 30-21 advantage into the final quarter and kept their foot on the gas to secure the second consecutive win.

No individual stats for Navarre were reported from the game.

Navarre falls to 4-14 (2-8 District 1-6A) after the loss, and hosts Jay on Tuesday in another non-class battle. The game is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

Pensacola Catholic 53, Destin 46: The Crusaders returned to the win column for the first time since Jan. 5 after the narrow seven-point victory over Destin.

Pensacola Catholic doubled up Destin after the first quarter, 18-6, before taking a 29-25 lead into halftime. The Crusaders responded with a 15-point third quarter and held on despite allowing 12 points from Destin in the final stanza.

Maddie Hammergren led Pensacola Catholic with 18 points. Jenecia Swindell also hit double-digits, recording 10 points. Hailee Danley and Ashley Hattaway both chipped in six points.

Pensacola Catholic (6-13) hosts Bayside Academy (Daphne, Alabama) on Wednesday at 6:15 p.m.

Tate 39, Elberta (Alabama) 6: The Aggies held an opponent to single-digits for the second time this season with a win over Elberta on Monday.

No quarter-by-quarter or individual stats were reported for Tate.

Tate (4-8) goes to Escambia on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

Choctaw 44, West Florida 38: The Jaguars lost their fifth consecutive game after dropping their road game at Choctaw on Monday.

No quarter-by-quarter scores, nor individual stats were reported.

West Florida (7-14, 0-2 District 1-4A) travels to district foe Pensacola on Tuesday for a 6 p.m. tip-off.

Jay 53, Baker 28: The Royals earned their 15th win of the season after topping Baker on Monday, earning the season sweep of the district rival Gators.

No quarter-by-quarter or individual stats were reported.

Jay (15-3) travels to Navarre on Tuesday.

Boys basketball

Choctaw 57, Pine Forest 55: For the fifth game in a row, the Pine Forest boys basketball team's fate has been decided by 10 points or less. For the third time in those five games, the Eagles found themselves in the loss column.

Pine Forest got off to a quick 17-9 lead, and maintained an eight-point advantage going into halftime, 30-22. Choctaw started to make a comeback, trailing just 41-36.

That's when Choctaw exploded for a 21-point fourth quarter, erasing a 15-point deficit, for the tight two-point victory.

J'Kosi Black and Marco Stallworth led the Eagles with 14 points apiece.

Pine Forest (10-10, 2-5 District 1-5A) travels to Foley (Alabama) on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
