AREA ROUNDUP: Iowa Park upsets No. 9 Clyde

IOWA PARK – Iowa Park kept its district title hopes alive by rallying past No. 9 Clyde Friday night for a 21-13 victory at home.

The Hawks can claim a share of the District 3-3A Division I title and the top seed by winning at Jim Ned next week. A loss would drop Iowa Park to the fourth seed.

Iowa Park trailed 13-0 at halftime, but Parker Allen scored on runs of 1 and 5 yards less than a minute apart midway through the third quarter sandwiched around a Bulldog fumble.

The Hawks’ defense held Clyde – which entered averaging 47 points a game – scoreless in the second half as Mark Lee had a fourth-down sack of Blake Carr to help the cause. Allen then scored from 3 yards out with 2:06 left to give IP some breathing room.

“One of the things we hang out hat on around here is defense,” IP coach Michael Swenson said. “To do what we could do and hold them to 13 points and shut them out in the second half was phenomenal. Couldn’t be more proud of our staff. Our secondary has had some tough games this year, and boy did they answer the challenge tonight.”

Nocona wraps up 6-2A Division I title

NOCONA – Brady McCasland scored with around six minutes remaining Friday night, helping Nocona claim the District 6-2A Division II title with a 27-22 win over Tom Bean.

McCasland led the Indians (8-0, 4-0) with 164 rushing yards and two touchdowns while also passing for 105 yards and a score. Johnathan Stone added 90 yards and a TD, while Charlie Fuller caught a TD pass.

"I'm so proud of my kids," Nocona coach Blake Crutsinger said. "We've been talking about this for a long time. To see it come true is pretty special."

A win at Alvord will give the Indians their first unbeaten regular season since 2012 when Nocona advanced to the state quarterfinals.

Vernon loses heartbreaker to Jim Ned

VERON – Jim Ned’s Dean Guffey scored from 8 yards out with 20 seconds remaining to lift the Indians to a 36-32 victory Friday night over Vernon.

The district matchup featured four lead changes in the second half and three touchdowns in about the final two minutes.

Jim Ned extended its lead to 28-20 with 5:44 left on Brayden Shipman’s 19-yard TD run, but the Lions responded with Julius Dawkins catching a 15-yard TD from Kale Sherrill with 2:02 remaining.

The two-point conversion pass failed, but Vernon recovered the onside kick and Sherrill found Dockins again from 10 yards out to put the Lions ahead 32-28 with 1:08 left. Jim Ned blocked the PAT and returned it for two points.

Jim Ned then broke a long run, setting up Guffey’s touchdown. Vernon returned the ensuing kickoff into Jim Ned territory, but the game ended after a couple incomplete passes.

Jim Ned (7-3, 3-1) is now in a three-way tie for first with Clyde and Iowa Park, while Vernon (7-2, 2-2) is a game back, sitting in fourth.

Newcastle edges Gold-Burg for district title

Issac King rushed for 331 yards and four touchdowns as No. 7 Newcastle held off Gold-Burg 78-74 to clinch the District 8-A Division II title Friday night.

The game was tied at 56-56 entering the fourth quarter and both teams scored three TDs in the final stanza, but the Bobcats made more of their PATs. Gold-Burg plays Strawn for a playoff berth next week.

In other six-man action, No. 10 Crowell took down Paducah 44-28 to clinch a playoff berth. The Wildcats will host No. 1 Benjamin next week to determine the 6-A Division II title.
