AREA FOOTBALL RECAP: Vernon escapes Gainesville with win

GAINESVILLE — After a 12-yard run by quarterback Cade Searcy with 39 seconds left, Gainesville opted to go for the win with a two-point conversion.

But Searcy’s pass fell incomplete, and Vernon escaped Leopard Stadium with a 21-20 victory.

The Lions (2-0) jumped out to a 13-0 lead in the first quarter but fell behind 14-13 in the third. Kale Sherrill scored on a 2-yard run with 2:46 left in the game, then completed a two-point conversion to Ty Scott, putting the Lions up 21-13.

Searcy scored his second rushing touchdown with 39 seconds remaining, and Gainesville (1-1) chose not to play for overtime.

Gainesville had a distinct advantage in total yards, 394-279, and forced Vernon to punt five times. Vernon’s defense stood tall when needed, while Julius Dawkins gave the Lions a special teams touchdown, returning a blocked punt 20 yards for the score.

Iowa Park falls in overtime thriller

FORT WORTH — Parker Allen connected with Rody Williams on an 8-yard TD pass, then Allen ran in the two-point conversion, forcing overtime against Benbrook on Thursday.

But the Hawks failed to match Benbrook’s touchdown in the extra session, resulting in a 34-28 loss at Farrington Field.

Benbrook scored on a 25-yard TD pass on third-and-10 during its overtime possession. The extra point was missed, opening the door for Iowa Park to steal the win.

But Allen had a pass tipped twice and landed in the arms of a Benbrook defensive back, dropping the Hawks to 0-2 to open the season.

Allen threw for two touchdowns and ran for another.

Bowie, Bridgeport post rare score

BOWIE — There was a unique score for a football game early in Bowie's 23-9 victory against Bridgeport.

Both teams recorded a safety in the first quarter, and the scoreboard briefly read 2-2 at Jackrabbit Stadium.

Bowie ruined the baseball score on a 2-yard run by Seth Mann in the second quarter, taking a 9-2 lead into halftime. Mann scored two more times in the second half, leading the Rabbits to their first win of the season.

And it was also the first head coaching win for Tyler Price, who took over the program in the spring.
