AREA FOOTBALL ROUNDUP: Quarterbacks stand out in Week 1

Jacksboro’s offense was as explosive as billed.

There was some surprise when we ranked Jacksboro No. 1 in the initial TRN Top 10 poll last week. And despite a 57-35 victory by the Tigers, they got a little scare early from Breckenridge.

I’ll admit, I was stunned to check on the Tigers early in the night and find them down 26-7 to Breckenridge. I thought, “We made a mistake with our rankings, and we are going to hear about it Monday when the new TRN Top 10 debuts.”

Then the Tigers erupted for 27 points in the second quarter, including three touchdown passes of at least 35 yards by quarterback Lando Belcher, taking a 34-26 advantage into halftime.

Belcher finished 13 of 24 for 309 yards and five touchdowns. Kaleem Howard was his top target, catching five passes for 147 yards. Luke Sams finished with 196 total yards and two touchdowns on 10 touches.

Graham’s Ty Thompson throws more TDs than incompletions.

Graham junior quarterback Ty Thompson picked the Bowie defense apart, completing 22 of 25 passes for 391 yards and five touchdowns. He also rushed for a score.

Three of Thompson’s TD passes went to senior Peyton Kinman who proved to be the quarterback’s favorite target last season, too. Kinman had five receptions for 164 yards, while Harrison Brockway finished with 107 receiving yards and a TD on five catches.

Graham running back Rylan Monsey found the end zone three times, twice rushing and once on a 6-yard pass from Thompson. Monsey finished with 112 rushing yards.

Windthorst freshman QB has sterling debut.

Freshman Brock Belcher got the starting nod at quarterback for Windthorst on Friday, and if his performance in a 37-34 victory against Henrietta is any indication, the next four years are going to be bright for the Trojan.

Belcher completed 19 of 23 passes for 344 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. He also ran for a team-high 36 yards and a TD.

Belcher is the son of longtime Windthorst assistant Scott Belcher and the younger brother of Cy Belcher, who led the Trojans to a state championship in 2020.

Belcher made great use of the Trojans’ big targets at receiver, particularly Kolby Teakell, who pulled in seven receptions for 247 yards. Teakell caught all three of Belcher’s touchdowns on 65, 56 and 78 yard throws.

Seymour’s Loyd had a great season debut.

The Seymour passing game remained prolific to open the 2023 season with junior Brayden Loyd completing 23 of 17 passes for 324 yards and five touchdowns in a 40-14 victory against Anson.

Loyd’s top target was Brason Zeissel, who caught four passes for 141 yards and three TDs. Hagan Anderson and Isaac Willden also had TD receptions.

Loyd shared the starting job with Keegan Gilbreath last season but has it to himself after Gilbreath transferred to Westbrook.

Vernon ground game in midseason form.

The Lions hit the ground running, literally, in a 40-20 victory against City View. Vernon finished the game with 422 rushing yards.

Junior Adarius Williams led the way with 151 rushing yards and three touchdowns, but he was just one of four Lions with at least 69 rushing yards. Seniors Jevon Fanner (91 yards) and TJ Thomas (76) teamed with sophomore Tru Gipson (69) to give the Lions more great production from its run-heavy offense.

Quarterback Kale Sherrill did throw for 89 yards, including 31 to Williams. Sophomore Ty Scott led the Lions with 36 yards.
