Area basketball roundup for Jan. 23: Defensive effort powers Parkston girls past Platte-Geddes

Jan. 23—PARKSTON, S.D. — Three double-figure scorers paced Parkston to a 53-35 home victory over Platte-Geddes in girls basketball action on Tuesday night.

Holding a 19-11 lead after one quarter, Parkston outscored Platte-Geddes 17-5 in the second quarter and the Trojans led by as many as 27 points in the third quarter.

Berkley Ziebart had 17 points on 7-for-13 shooting, while Gracie Oakley had 12 points and Lauren Ziebart added 11 points and six rebounds for the Trojans.

For the Black Panthers, Karly VanDerWerff had 19 points on 8-for-15 shooting. P-G was 4-for-20 at the free-throw line in the loss.

Parkston (8-3) will play at Lennox on Thursday, Jan. 25. Platte-Geddes (4-7) visits Colome on Friday, Jan. 26.

PARKSTON, S.D. — Four double-digit scorers helped Parkston defeat Platte-Geddes in boys basketball 70-54 on Tuesday night at the Parkston Armory. The win sends the Trojans to a 9-2 record on the season.

Luke Bormann and Will Jodozi led the Trojans with 16 points. Payton Koehn had 15 points and James Deckert tallied 12 points. Jodozi had a team-best eight rebounds, while Bormann and Koehn each had seven rebounds. Parkston shot 48% from the field in the victory.

Braxton Breukelman posted a double-double for the Black Panthers, scoring 13 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Parker Bailey and Tanner Dyk each had 11 points for P-G, which was held to 34% shooting.

Parkston visits Lennox on Thursday, Jan. 25, while Platte-Geddes (6-3) has a road trip to Colome on Friday, Jan. 26.

KIMBALL, S.D. — Bon Homme scored 40 points in the first half and outscored Kimball/White Lake 25-11 in the second half for a 65-38 victory in girls basketball action on Tuesday night.

Jurni Vavruska had 17 points for the Cavaliers, who had 15 points from Kenadee Kozak and 13 points from Erin Huesinkveld. Bon Homme assisted on 16 of its 25 made field goals. Bon Homme led 22-18 after one quarter but used an 18-9 edge in the second period to widen the lead for good.

Ryann Nielsen had a game-high 22 points for KWL, with Harley Namanny scoring nine points for the Wildkats, who were kept to 31% shooting in the game.

Bon Homme (7-3) hosts Andes Central/Dakota Christian on Thursday, Jan. 25 in Tyndall, while Kimball/White Lake (7-5) hosts Gregory on Jan. 25 in White Lake.

KIMBALL, S.D. — In a close, low-scoring battle, Bon Homme earned a victory over Region 5A foe Kimball/White Lake 38-33 in boys basketball action.

Chapin Cooper and Jace Toupal led Bon Homme in scoring, but no point totals were provided. The Cavaliers had only three turnovers and shot 41.3% from the field in the victory, which saw Bon Homme lead 27-21 going to the fourth quarter.

KWL was led by 17 points and 10 rebounds from Blake Leiferman, while Lantz Bass had nine points. Hudson Heath had seven assists for the Wildkats.

Bon Homme (6-6) will host Andes Central/Dakota Christian on Thursday, Jan. 25 in Tyndall. KWL (3-7) will travel to Wolsey-Wessington on Friday, Jan. 26.

* A fast start for Mount Vernon/Plankinton allowed the Titans to knock off Class A No. 2 Wagner 59-45 on Tuesday. The Titans led 20-8 after one quarter and 38-19 at halftime. Emilee Fox had 26 points and nine rebounds, powered by six 3-pointers, with 13 points from Kyia Schmidt and 12 points from Reagan Rus. For the Red Raiders, Macy Koupal had 22 points, while Ashlyn Koupal had 12 points.

* Avon jumped to a 17-6 lead after one quarter and picked up a 46-39 win over Burke. McKenna Kocmich had 18 points, with 11 points from Courtney Sees and 10 points for Rilyn Thury of the Pirates. Burke's Cecily Geaghan had 16 points and Paige Bull had 10 point and 11 rebounds.

* Class B No. 2 Centerville picked up a home win over Tripp-Delmont/Armour 63-43 on Tuesday night. Althea Gust had 17 points, Keira Austin scored 14 points and Emma Marshall tallied 12 points for the Tornadoes. TDA's Megan Reiner had a game-high 21 points, with 11 points each from Mia Reiner and Kinley Spaans.

* Alyssa Moschell's 13 points, seven steals, seven rebounds, and five assists powered Hanson to a 53-34 win over Sanborn Central/Woonsocket. Taziah Hawkins and Kylie Haiar each had 12 points for the Beavers. Kamryn Oschner led SCW with eight points and Liz Boschee grabbed eight rebounds.

* Jumping out front 22-8 after the first quarter, Andes Central/Dakota Christian cruised to a 53-39 win over Wessington Springs. Josie Brouwer had 13 points and four assists, Halle Olson collected 10 points and six blocks, and Mahpiya Irving had 11 points for the Thunder. Avery Orth had 17 points and 10 rebounds for the Spartans.

* Dani VanDerWerff's double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds propelled Gregory to a 51-41 victory over Stanley County. Ella Sperl tallied 10 points and 12 rebounds for the Gorillas, and Asia VanDerWerff finished with 11 points and five assists. Keira Briggs had a game-high 17 points for Stanley County.

* Tripp-Delmont/Armour, which had a 14-2 run in the third quarter, picked up a 52-45 road win over Centerville. Isaac Wunder had 16 points to lead the Nighthawks, who had 12 points and eight rebounds from Dalton Westendorf. Aiden Bobzin had 11 points for the host Tornadoes.

* Wagner took down Mount Vernon/Plankinton 59-52 for a win between Region 5A foes. Carter Cournoyer had 19 points on 7-for-11 shooting along with 13 rebounds, with 15 points from Parker Petry and 12 points for Joey Cournoyer. For the Titans, Zach Baker had 17 points and Tyce Feistner had 16 points.

* An 18-5 second-quarter margin helped propel Wessington Springs to a 54-26 win over Andes Central/Dakota Christian. Parker Graff led the Spartans' effort with 21 points, going 3-of-7 from the 3-point line. Ryder Michalek tallied 14 points and three assists, and Colby Flowers had eight points and seven rebounds.

* Canistota won the second half by a 36-20 margin in a 57-41 win over Chester on Tuesday. Tage Ortman had 25 points and six assists, while Brandon Kjetland had 20 points and eight rebounds in the win. The Hawks were 5-for-21 shooting in the first half before hitting 14 of 20 shots in the final 16 minutes. Jovi Wolf had 21 points for the visiting Flyers.

* Baltic's Jack Erickson scored 35 points and logged seven rebounds for the Bulldogs in a 78-54 win at McCook Central/Montrose in Montrose. Kellen Artz had 14 points for the Bulldogs, who outscored MCM 46-23 in the middle two quarters of the game. MCM's Jackson Schmidt had 13 points off the bench and Mason Sabers had 12 points.

* Bridgewater-Emery outscored Freeman Academy/Marion 23-6 in the fourth quarter to win 74-51. Jase Kayser led the Huskies with 19 points. Camdyn Stoterau tallied 17 points, and Ben Weber scored 17 points and collected 10 rebounds. For FAM, Karter Weber scored 19 points, and Jackson Donlan had 11 points.
