Angel Hernandez, late Chisholm Trail runner, honored at region cross country meet in Lubbock

Antonio Hernandez said his son "gave everything 150%," including cross country.

Angel Hernandez displayed that with a key finish in the District 3-6A meet earlier this month, nabbing the last points to push Fort Worth Chisholm Trail to third place and the final berth to regionals.

Just before the Rangers took the starting line at Tuesday's Region I-6A meet, officials honored their fallen teammate.

Sophomore Angel Hernandez collapsed and died soon after completing the district race Oct. 13, according to the school newspaper, The Cinco Peso Press. Lubbock ISD athletic director Mike Meeks presented his father, Antonio, with a medal in Angel's memory on behalf of LISD athletics and Region I cross country.

"There's nothing that could change the fact that my son's not here today," the elder Hernandez said. "But when you see all the love and his reach that he had … It helps soothe the heart to know that you have people that care and that support system, a shoulder to lean on in need. That's what makes it beautiful and amazing: bringing people together."

Hernandez said he was honored by the gesture, the latest show of support from the cross country community. He hopes Angel is remembered for his work ethic and good heart.

"He treated people with respect," Antonio Hernandez said. "The love that he had for everybody, if we could have a lot of that, that'll change the world."

A GoFundMe was set up to help with funeral expenses.
