Hueneme High and Durley Park: Ventura County Legends

How do I describe Hueneme High and Durley Park? They're located 45 minutes north of LA?

Well, Hueneme the city has 22,000 population, but it's the warm and delightful people you meet in Hueneme that impress most. And it has produced some of the best athletes this state has ever known.

Freddie Bradley - I love this guy and I hoop with him. He's a football player; first Hueneme High School athlete drafted into the NFL in 1996 in the 7th round.

Charles Dillon - Washington State wide receiver for Green Bay Packers briefly, that's my dude.

Josh Pinkard - Football player; free safety for the two-time championship USC Trojans in 2004 and 2005. He was also an undrafted rookie and signed with the Seattle Seahawks in 2011.

His brother Dee Pinkard is is my guy, dope baller and future teacher.

We can't forget the whole Nunnery family, their imprint on this city is unmistakable. They have produced truly incredible athletes who are incredibly fantastic people. Every time I run into a Nunnery, I say, "Man I wish I had Nunnery blood coursing through my veins."

Yup, they're that dope.

But right next to Hueneme, I teach at a school from Durley Park in Oxnard.

I know like 4-5 incredible people from there, coolest people you'll ever meet. My dude Steve, he's a dude that's the realest, most helpful person to kids I ever met.

Anderson Paak is that new hotness, he reps Oxnard 100% because he's the dopest of dope. He's as good as Kendrick Lamar. I love A-Paak because he has pride in our city.

Then there's my dude Mel, heart of gold, great at business too. He was a footballer at USC.

My girl is Ms Latife,

She's the most passionate shoe collector and fan of hoops I've ever, ever met. She has a heart of gold as well.

My dude Robert, he's a creative genius in how his mind works, he loves to take award winning photos.

You see, near Durley Park they grow up wanting to make money, the economic state that folks grow in near Durley Park empowers them to want to rise up.

So if I told you I knew a lot of people from that Durley Park area who had Jay-Z's personal contact on their phone - I wouldn't be lying, they got it like that at Durley Park.

Best thing?

Everyone from that area treats everybody so great, everybody is equal in their eyes. They'll chop it up with anyone and treat them like good people, Durley Park people will treat u like fam.

Yes, the people from Hueneme and Durley Park taught this guy from Ventura that we’re all equal, that we're all children of God.

Tupac Shakur says in his poem,

"You try to plant somethin in the concrete, y'knowhatImean?

If it GROW, and the rose petal got all kind of

Scratches and marks, you not gon' say, "Damn, look at

All the scratches and marks on the rose that grew from concrete"

You gon' be like, "Damn! A rose grew from the concrete?!"

Same thing with me, y'knowhatImean? I grew out of all of this

Instead of sayin, "Damn, he did this, he did this,"

Just be like, "DAMN! He grew out of that? He came out of that?"

That's what they should say, y'knowhatImean?

All the trouble to survive and make good out of the dirty, nasty

Y'knowhatImean unbelievable lifestyle they gave me

I'm just tryin to make somethin."

That's Hueneme High, that's Durley Park.
