Amiyah Gibson leads Lakeview to All-City girls golf crown

BATTLE CREEK - The competition has changed a bit, but the result was the same.

For the second year in a row, Lakeview won the annual All-City Girls Golf Championship. And this year, the Spartans did it by beating both Harper Creek and Pennfield. For several years, Lakeview and Harper Creek were the only two city teams to field a girls golf squad. However, Pennfield has added the sport this season, making the All-City event a three-team race this year.

Lakeview finished first in the 2023 All-City Girls Golf Championship with a team score of 173 with Harper Creek at 181 for second and the Panthers third, with the event held at Cedar Creek Golf Course on Monday.

"This was our goal, coming into this week, to bring everything together and play as a team," Lakeview coach David Oullette said. "So it was a huge goal to win All-City this year. This was really the first event this year where we had several girls really put up good numbers, so we are starting to click as a team."

Lakeview junior Amiyah Gibson was match medalist and All-City champ for the first time, finishing with a round of 40. Gibson only won by one stroke, holding off Harper Creek's Arabella Stanley, who finished with a 41. A birdie on the final hole for Gibson was the difference.

"I thought I played pretty good. I was kinda all over the place, but I ended it pretty good. I finished with a birdie on 18. I brought everything together at the end," Gibson said.

Lakeview also saw top finishes by Kayla Franklin, who took third at 42, and Sarah Metzger, who was fourth at 43. Gibson, Franklin and Metzger all earned All-City honors as teammate Jose Pawlowicz finished out the scoring for the Spartans with a 48.

Along with the 41 by Stanley, Harper Creek's Ellie Sandel was fifth overall at 45 and Mallory Flanders sixth as the trio also earned All-City honors. Beaver seniors Celia Kyger and Rachel Kyger had a 48 and 50, respectively.

Vivian Burns was the top scorer for Pennfield, carding a 58.
