American Nathan Adrian takes bronze in 100-meter freestyle

RIO DE JANEIRO — Four years later, Nathan Adrian is no longer the best 100-meter freestyle swimmer in the world. But he’ll take another Olympic medal.

After winning gold in the 100 free in London, Adrian took bronze at the Rio Games on Wednesday night, finishing with a time of 47:85. Kyle Chalmers of Australia won gold with a time of 47:58 while Pieter Timmers of Belgium took silver.

Earlier in the week, Adrian anchored the American 4×100-meter freestyle team to gold. He showed similar mettle in the individual race but couldn’t defend his gold in the event. With the 50-meter freestyle and an expected spot in the 4×100-meter medley, Adrian has a chance to win two more medals and bring his career Olympic total to eight.

American Caeleb Dressel finished sixth.
