Amaad Wainright released from scholarship by K-State following felony charges

Amaad Wainright says he’s no longer a member of the Kansas State basketball team.

Wainright was indefinitely suspended by the team earlier in April after he was arrested in connection with an alleged road-rage shooting in January. Friday, Wainright tweeted that Kansas State had released him from his scholarship.

The incident happened Jan. 17 in Kansas City — a day after Kansas State beat Oklahoma in Manhattan, Kansas — and allegedly involved a car that was registered in Wainright’s name. According to the alleged victim, someone in the passenger seat of the car registered to Wainwright pulled out a gun and shot into the victim’s backseat during the evening rush hour on one of Kansas City’s busiest highways.

It was revealed in February that the car was registered to Wainright. At the time, Kansas State said the matter was resolved to the best of its knowledge and that Amaad had cooperated with authorities.

On April 3, Wainwright was arrested by U.S. Marshals and charged with felony fleeing and eluding and felony obstruction.

Wainright played in 18 games after the alleged shooting, including all of Kansas State’s postseason games. He played 11 minutes in the team’s Elite Eight loss to Loyola-Chicago.
