Alvarado teams among last standing in postseason for Johnson County

Feb. 21—On the girls side, the Alvarado Lady Indians basketball team has emerged as the last team standing in the postseason with a historic victory Tuesday night. The Lady Indians punched the program's first-ever ticket to the regional tournament with a 56-52 third-round win over Oak Cliff Faith and Family at Mansfield High School on Tuesday night.

In that contest, junior guard Joslyn Jarmon scored a team-high 20 points while her senior backcourt running mate Candra Bridgewater netted 16 in the win. The Lady Indians (21-15, 10-2) will be competing in the regional semifinals for the first time in program history against the Canton Lady Eagles. The game will take place at 5:30 p.m. Friday at Texas A&M University-Commerce.

Meanwhile, the Alvarado boys squad took on and defeated the Western Hills Cougars by a final score of 51-45 Tuesday night at Centennial High School. Sophomore guard Desmond Mitchell led the charge with a team-high 16 points while senior Sha'Marian Lee poured in 14 points. Up next, the Indians (24-7, 9-3) will take on Panther Creek in the area round. Tipoff will take place at 7 p.m. Friday at the Arlington ISD Athletic Complex. The win for Alvarado means only it and the Rio Vista Eagles are the remaining two local schools in the postseason.

Also in action, Godley Ladycats faced off against Frisco Panther Creek in the Class 4A area basketball playoffs on February 16, 2024, at the Arlington ISD Athletics Center.

The Lady Panthers won the hard-fought contest 45-43. Panther Creek advanced to the regional quarterfinals to face Fort Worth Dunbar.

In the bi-district round on Feb. 12, the GHS girls won the matchup 71-17 over Fort Worth Western Hills at Burleson Centennial High School.

The Godley girls posted a perfect 12-0 district record, sweeping all district foes through both rounds of play to earn the team's second district title in a row.

The varsity squad includes Lexi Abbott, Payton DeFoor, Bree Hubbard, Alyssa Jimenez, Logan Reed, Trinity Roden, Kinlee Smith, Reese Tennery and Ava Wilson. Junior varsity players joining the varsity for the playoffs are Nola Briscoe, Kase Grimsley, Lila Heiner, Sophia Hodges and Sadey Hughey.

Head coach Mark Chauveaux is assisted by Kristi Mayes and Skyler Warrick as well as athletic trainer Duke Graham. Team managers are Bailee Barbaro, Taylor Hayes, Ava Slidell and Marleigh Thompson.

In other Johnson County action on the hardwood, the Grandview Zebras and Keene Chargers saw their respective seasons come to a close in the bi-district round. The Zebras' season concluded with a 63-51 loss to Scurry-Rosser while the Chargers fell 58-55 against Kemp.
