Akron Zips beat Central Michigan to clinch spot in MAC women's basketball tournament
The University of Akron women's basketball team earned a trip to next week's Mid-American Conference Tournament with a come-from-behind 61-54 win at Central Michigan on Saturday.
The Zips used a 21-8 run over the final 10 minutes of the game to earn the victory. Reagan Bass (Strongsville) scored 12 of her team-high 16 points in the second half to lead four Akron players in double figures. Bass, a sophomore forward, became the fastest Zip to surpass the 800-point plateau. She also grabbed seven rebounds .
Layne Ferrell led Akron (17-12, 8-10) with eight rebounds to go along with 13 points. Molly Neitzel scored 12 and Dominque Camp added 11 for the Zips.
After trailing 46-40 to start the fourth quarter, the Zips used a 9-2 run fueled by baskets from four different players to take a 49-48 advantage on a bucket and free throw by Bass at the 6:55 mark.
Akron went ahead to stay 53-52 on a layup by Ferrell with 4:13 to play. Bass added back-to-back layups to extend the Zips' margin to 57-54 before UA made its free throws down the stretch to secure the win.
Sydney Harris had a game-high 20 points for the Chippewas (6-23, 4-14).
Akron will open MAC Tournament play against Ball State in the last of four games Wednesday at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse.
