Aiken High School names Derrell Black as next head boys basketball coach

Derrell Black is returning to the Cincinnati Metro Athletic Conference.

Black has been named the next head boys basketball coach at Aiken High School, the school's athletic department announced on Twitter Monday afternoon.

Black, a 2009 Hughes High School graduate, spent eight seasons as an assistant coach with the Big Red before he was named the head boys basketball coach in June 2020 to replace Bryan Wyant, who had accepted the same position at Princeton.

In one season as the head coach, Black led Hughes to a 10-9 record and a fourth-place finish in the CMAC-Red division. Black spent the 2021-2022 season as Wyant's assistant at Princeton. The Vikings were 17-8 and finished fourth in the Greater Miami Conference.

Black started his coaching career at Hughes at the junior-high level with current Purcell Marian girls basketball coach Jamar Mosley. After one year, he joined the varsity program as an assistant while also serving as the head coach of the Big Red freshman team for four seasons and the junior-varsity club for two. In 2017, he led Hughes to a freshman CMAC title.

"(I'm) excited to get started and unlock all the untapped potential here at Aiken," Black said in a press release.

Black replaces Greg Tye Jr., who went 9-13 in his one year as the Falcons head coach last season. The prior three seasons under Ty Cass, Aiken went 42-30 overall and won a district championship and a share of the CMAC title in 2019.

Aiken opens its season at home against Mount Healthy on Nov. 25.
