Adrian, Tecumseh prepare for boys tennis season

Adrian and Tecumseh are the only two Lenawee County schools with tennis programs. Both will be chasing Chelsea in the SEC.

Tecumseh head coach Jennifer Morgan said her squad played a couple of times a week to get ready for the season.

“This was very well attended,” she said. “It is so important that players continue to work on their skills outside of the season. The players that have done this have noticeably improved.”

Here’s a look at Adrian and Tecumseh:

ADRIAN

Coach: Todd Barrus, first year

2022 Record: 3-5-1

Returning players: Senior Sawyer Cranmore; Junior Nick Schefka; Sophomores Cayden Barrus, Harrison Boyd, Nathan Leonard, Maddox LaRue and Coltin Case.

New: Carter Howard, Mystic Russell, Nolan Wood

Outlook: Barrus is a hard-working sophomore while Schefka is skilled and a team leader. Barrus expects big things from Howard and Wood as they step into varsity roles.

League: Barrus lists Chelsea as the team to beat. “We let a few hey away from us last year, but I expect us to be in the upper part of the conference with the talent we have,” he said.

Coach says: “We are thin in numbers but have some solid returnees and a few newcomers that are looking good.”

TECUMSEH

Coach: Jennifer Morgan

Returning players: Pike Johnson, Luke Barden, Gregory Hagen, Troy Andrews, Carter Humphrey, Kaden Petty

New: Declan Cornish, Archer McKibben, Tyler Roan, and Kyle Barden

Outlook: Morgan has high expectations from Barden, Hagen, and Andrews.

“All of these players work very hard to improve their skills at practice. They listen to direction from the coaches, and they are competitive.”

League: SEC, which includes Chelsea, Pinckney, Ypsilanti, and Jackson. “It’s a tough league,” Morgan said. “Chelsea always has a very strong team and will generally make a run at states. We can be very competitive.”

Coach says: “I am hopeful for the season. We did lose quite a few seniors last year, but I have seen a large amount of improvement from all my returning players. We currently do not have a full team so that will put us at a disadvantage, but I know that all my players will give their all in each match.”
