Adrean Post rallies late to win first game in American Legion baseball tournament

BINGHAMTON - Adrean Post needed a late rally and a few more innings Tuesday to pull off a 7-4 win in its first game at New York's state senior division American Legion baseball tournament.

Adrean Post, the champion of District V and one of six teams competing in the three-day tournament at Mirabito Stadium, defeated the Clinton County Mariners, the lone team from District IV, 7-4 in 12 innings on the first of two days of pool play.

Adrean Post, playing as the away team, scored first in the top of the second before Clinton County took the lead in the bottom of the inning. The Mariners loaded the bases for leadoff hitter Brady Doorey who cleared them with a double. Another run an inning later put Clinton County up 4-1.

Adrean Post got one run back in the fourth inning but was down to its final strike in the seventh when a hit tied the game.

Doorey went six innings on the mound before turning the ball over to the Clinton County bullpen. Two hits and a walk were aided by two wild pitches as Adrean Post grabbed the two runs it needed to extend the game.

Fran Neth and Iain Farber combined to pitch 4 2/3 hitless innings of relief while Adrean Post climbed back to tie the score and Tanner Warren pitched the final four scoreless innings for the win, closing the game out with the tying run at the plate after taking a three-run lead in the top of the 12th.

Adrean Post outhit the Mariners 17-4 but Clinton County took advantage of eight walks and two Adrean Post errors.Ben Deragon had four hits and two runs batted in for Adrean Post; Alex Hoole singled, doubled, walked three times and scored a run; Warren had three hits, a run and an RBI; and Sean Burdick, the starting pitcher, had two hits and drove in two runs.

Evan Mobley scored two runs for Clinton County.

Adrean Post earned its spot in the tournament by winning the District V tournament in Utica last week. Adrean Post entered that tournament seeded sixth with an 8-8 regular season record and beat the top three seeds, including a 9-6 victory over No. 2 Whitestown Post Thursday, the day after suffering its first tournament loss to the defending champion.

Whitestown Post was also the runner-up at last year's state tournament.

Three games Wednesday will determine the Final Four for semifinal and championship play Thursday at the home of the Binghamton Mets. Adrean Post plays the nightcap at 7 p.m. against District VI's Windsor Knights, beaten 8-6 Tuesday by the Orange County Outlaws of District IX.

Defending champion Greece Post, the repeat winner from District VII, defeated District VIII Brounshidle Post 1-0 on a bases-loaded walk in the seventh inning of the tournament's opening game.

Greece Post and the Orange County Outlaws play second Wednesday following the 12:30 p.m. game between the Clinton County Mariners and Brounshidle Post.
