Adams, Breuer lead Newton girls to 13th at Ogden

Jan. 6—OGDEN — Kylee Adams and Claire Breuer placed fourth in their weight classes and Stella Cupples, Ella Machin and Ashlyn Van Manen all finished fifth at the Ogden Girls Tournament on Saturday.

Six Cardinals entered the tournament and the Newton girls' wrestling team finished 18-12 on the day and ended up 13th in the 29-team field.

In the loss to Ames, Newton was 3-3 in contested matches but suffered a 6-1 disadvantage in forfeits. Adams took a forfeit at 100, while the wins came on pins from Carr, Machin and Van Manen.

Sixth-ranked Ankeny won the tournament with 236.5 points. The rest of the top five featured Osage (180), No. 13 Spencer (173), Algona (125) and LeMars (116).

Ella Machin

Adams (18-7) was fourth at 100 pounds after going 3-2. One of her wins was a 6-4 decision over Colfax-Mingo's Lily Webster, but Webster pinned Adams in the third-place match later in the day.

Breuer (12-8) finished fourth at 135 after a 4-2 day. She won three times by decision (6-5, 12-6, 10-6) and one of her losses came in the third-place bout against No. 9 Bella Mulder of Dallas Center-Grimes.

Cupples (110), Machin (170) and Van Manen (190) all placed fifth.

Cupples (15-3) was 3-2 with three pins. She was 1-1 against Avery Buhr of West Des Moines Valley and her other loss came against No. 9 Evelyn Kramer of South Central Calhoun.

Both Machin (16-8) and Van Manen (5-2) were 4-2 with three pins and Kamiya Lepley finished 0-2 at 145.

Cardinals lose twice in road triangular

AMES — Newton couldn't quite come up with a dual win on Thursday during a road quadrangular.

The Cardinals accepted four forfeits but lost 31-30 on criteria to Martensdale-St. Marys and fell 51-24 to host Ames.

In the loss to Martensdale-St. Marys, the Cardinals got a win by fall from Adams and Breuer, Machin, Van Manen and Savannah Carr (140) all won by forfeit.

The Blue Devils won the dual by way of more pins. The Cardinals were 1-2 in contested matches but had a 4-3 advantage in forfeits. There were four double forfeits.

In the loss to Ames, Newton was 3-3 in contested matches but suffered a 6-1 disadvantage in forfeits. Adams took the forfeit at 100, while the wins came on pins from Carr, Machin and Van Manen.

Carr, Machin, Van Manen and Adams all were 2-0 for the night with one pin and one forfeit each.
