Here are 5 things we learned from Week 11 of the Iowa high school boys basketball season

Well, the Iowa high school boys basketball regular season is complete.

Now, it’s time for substate competition. There are plenty of teams who could make a run in the postseason and several programs poised to create some drama and upset their opponents.

Here is what we learned from the final week of the boys basketball regular season.

Valley's Curtis Stinson Jr. returning from injury is a big boost for the Tigers heading into postseason play.
Valley's Curtis Stinson Jr. returning from injury is a big boost for the Tigers heading into postseason play.

Stats and records are based on what was input to GoBound as of 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 17.

1. Which teams remain undefeated heading into the playoffs?

Cedar Rapids Kennedy stands alone in Class 4A with a 21-0 record. The Cougars got there by defeating some of the top teams in the state, including Waukee, Linn-Mar, Valley and Iowa City West.

There are no undefeated teams in 3A, but Clear Lake and Solon each only have one loss. Underwood and West Burlington are both undefeated in 2A, and Keota is the only team with a perfect record in 1A.

2. Curtis Stinson Jr. is very much back

The Valley junior missed about seven games in the middle of the season, but he is back and hasn’t missed a beat since his return. Stinson is a solid combination of offense and defense, and he is the on-court leader for the Tigers. The game runs through him, which showed during his absence.

Stinson averaged 19.4 points per game in the regular season – while shooting 51.7% from the field – and added 6.9 rebounds and 3.2 assists.

3. Nevada came up big in the final game of the regular season

Remember when we mentioned that Clear Lake only has one loss on the season? Well, it came in the final game of the regular season. Nevada came back from a 19-8 deficit in the first quarter and outscored Clear Lake 23-16 in the third and 22-11 in the fourth to pull off a win on the road.

It’s hard not to think about what could’ve been different. The Lions were without their leading scorer and rebounder, Thomas Meyer. Also, the game was originally scheduled for Jan. 9 but was postponed due to inclement weather.

4. Austin Goodrich won’t soon forget his game-winning shot against Williamsburg

Marion boys basketball finished the regular season on a four-game winning streak that included victories over top-10 opponents Clear Creek Amana and Williamsburg. But the final win against the Raiders truly came down to the last seconds.

With 1.1 seconds on the clock and down by one, Josh Noll launched an inbound pass from half-court, directly into the hands of Austin Goodrich. He jumped to grab the pass and, without hesitation, floated a jumper toward the basket.

The ball went in as time expired for the 65-64 win.

5. Reed Pfaltzgraff returned to the court for Bondurant-Farrar

The Bluejays senior missed much of Bondurant-Farrar's football season and almost all of the basketball season with an injury. But Pfaltzgraff – who was a big part of the Bluejays state championship-winning team last season – was able to make it back on the court, even if just for a bit, in the last game of the season.
