49ers worked out 2 DEs ahead of training camp

While the 90-man roster is mostly set for the 49ers with less than a week to go until training camp, the club will still look for ways to add depth and improve throughout the preseason. Defensive end is an area of their roster that could use some help, so it makes sense they worked out a pair of defensive ends, Justus Reed and Eddie Yarbrough on Friday according to the NFL’s transaction wire.

Reed went undrafted this year and originally signed as a free agent with the Titans. He spent his first two college seasons at Florida where he played in eight games and recorded 2.0 sacks and 2.0 tackles for loss. Reed then transferred to Youngstown State where he was relatively unproductive in 2017, sat out 2018 with an injury, then broke out in 2019 with 19 tackles for loss and 13.0 sacks. He transferred to Virginia Tech for the 2020 campaign and put up 9.0 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks in 11 games for the Hokies.

Yarbrough has a little NFL experience. He was a UDFA with the Bills in 2017, but he played in 16 games and notched a sack. After two seasons in Buffalo he wound up with the Vikings. In three years Yarbrough has played in 35 games with six starts, 1.0 sacks and eight tackles for loss.
