Frederick city and county boys who have gone off to higher institutions of learning are showing up well on athletic teams representing these institutions. Reports from College Park are to the effect that George Luckey, formerly of this county, a graduate of the Boys' high school, and former star on the Cadet football eleven, is winning a regular berth on Curley Byrd's team. Amos Beachley, well-known as a soccer, track and baseball star at Middletown high school during the past two or three seasons, and one of the most popular young athletes in the county, is a member of the second freshman football team at University of Maryland.

At a cost of approximately $10,500 additional equipment will be added to the Frederick central office of the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Co., according to an announcement made today by Paul I. Payne, manager. With the completion of this work about June 1, 1924, it is estimated that ample facilities will have been provided to take care of traffic for the next five years.

Firefighters spent most of Friday battling a stubborn woods fire off Baugher Road near Lewistown. The fire involved about 3 1/2 acres of woodland in Cunningham Falls State Park and was fanned by changing winds. Lewistown Fire Chief Donald Stull Jr. said he called for additional units almost immediately because of the steep terrain and the firefighter shortage. When Central Alarm sent out a message asking that any available firefighters respond to assist, they probably didn't expect the U.S. Marines. The 40 Marines, who came from nearby Camp David, were a welcome relief.

With House Speaker Newt Gingrich giving up his role at the top of the House Republican leadership, Rep. Roscoe Bartlett, R-6th, said Friday he will lead an effort to draft Judiciary Chairman Henry Hyde as the new Speaker.
